NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team fell, 4-1, to New Orleans in Southland Conference action Friday at Maestri Field.
UNO (14-10, 7-6 SLC) picked up all their runs in the first inning and then made the lead hold up against the Lions (20-6, 7-3 SLC).
Privateer designated hitter Matt Gonzalez launched a solo homer with one out. It was his fourth of the season. Collin Husser's third of the season, a three-run shot, came with two outs. Despite the two homers, SLU starting pitcher
Brennan Stuprich struck out three batters in the frame.
Stuprich and
Chase Ambrose combined to hold UNO hitless for the remainder of the game, with Stuprich recording double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season.
With 11 strikeouts, the Kenner native jumped into the program's Top 10 with 236 career whiffs. He currently ranks eighth, just one behind Richard Simon (1970-73) and Risley St. Germain (2002-05). Stuprich also ranks fourth in career starts (46), tied with Jordan Hymel (2010-13) and Tate Scioneaux (2013-15), and ninth in career innings pitched (274.1) after bypassing Craig Gonzales (1998-2002) and Wade Miley (2006-08).
The Lions picked up their only run in the seventh on
Ben Robichaux's fifth home run of the season. UNO pitchers limited SLU to three hits total.
Privateer starting pitcher Grant Edwards (1-2) earned the win, allowing one run in 7.0 innings pitched. He scattered two hits and two walks, striking out eight batters. Bryce Calloway worked the final two innings to pick up his seventh save of the season. Stuprich (6-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in five innings of work.
