NATCHITOCHES, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team completed a SLC series sweep with a 9-1 victory at Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at Demon Diamond.
SLU (26-8, 8-1 SLC) used a seven-run sixth inning to earn the victory and maintain the top spot in the SLC standings. Northwestern State fell to 3-27 overall and 0-9 in league action.
Shelby Morris,
Chloe Magee,
Kailey Dixon and
Shenita Tucker had two hits apiece to fuel a 14-hit attack. Morris, Magee and
Cydnee Schneider each drove in two runs for SLU.
Macie LaRue (10-0) remained unbeaten in the circle in her debut season with the Lady Lions. The Lovelady, Texas native held NSU to three hits and struck out four in five innings of work.
Southeastern took the early lead in the top of the first. Magee singled and scored later in the frame on an RBI single by Schneider to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lions added to their advantage in the top of the fourth inning.
Colleen Kulivan singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tucker and scored when Morris flared an RBI single to left to put SLU up, 2-0.
Northwestern State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Carissa Hernandez blooped an RBI double just inside the left field line to cut the Southeastern advantage to 2-1.
Southeastern got the run back in the top of the sixth inning. Singles by
Maddie Watson, Dixon and Tucker plated a run that put SLU up, 3-1, and chased Brooklynn Stohler (2-17) from the game. Morris greeted Kaymie Chandler with an RBI single, then Magee followed with a two-run single.
Maria Detillier got into the act next with a single of her own to score Magee and chase Chandler with the hosts facing a 7-1 deficit.
After a
Brilee Ford walk, Schneider drove in Detillier with an RBI groundout.
Breanna Fontenot followed with an RBI single to score Ford and put Southeastern up, 9-1. Britney Lewinksi tossed a scoreless sixth inning to secure the mercy-rule win.
SLU will return home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game series at North Oak Park. The series with the Islanders opens up with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and features fireworks following the games. Military personnel will receive free admission by presenting a valid military ID to Saturday's noon series finale. The series will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at LionUpRadio.org.
