Box Score LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team dropped a 65-57 decision to Stephen F. Austin in the championship game of the 2025 Southland Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Legacy Center.
The third-seeded Ladyjacks (29-5) will represent the SLC in the NCAA Tournament. As the regular season champions, SLU (26-5) will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA-sponsored WBIT. The WBIT field will be announced shortly after the NCAA Tournament selection show, which is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
"This was a tough loss today, but hats off to SFA", SLU head coach
Ayla Guzzardo commented. "Today's game will be the immediate focus, but it doesn't take away from what we were able to accomplish – 19 conference wins and a regular season championship. This group accomplished a lot, took our program to new heights and are champions. This one hurts for our players and staff, but we still have more basketball to play."
SLC Player of the Year
Alexius Horne and
Taylor Bell shared team-high honors with 13 points apiece. Horne was joined on the SLC All-Tournament team by
Jalencia Pierre, who finished with a tea-high three assists and three steals.
SFA was led by Trinity Moore, who was named Tournament MVP after finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds in a double-double effort. Harmanie Dominguez, Ashlyn Traylor-Walker and Avery Vansickle added 13 points each. Traylor-Walker and Lamar's Akasha Davis rounded out the All-Tournament team.
Neither team could get a clear advantage in the opening period, as neither team led by more than five points. SFA's outside shooting (4-for-8 from three) allowed the Ladyjacks to take an 18-17 lead after the initial 10 minutes.
The Lumberjacks scored the first five points of the second quarter to grow their advantage to six. However, the Lady Lions were able to answer in the latter minutes of the first half. A three by Horne capped a 12-4 run and sent SLU into the break with a 32-29 advantage.
Southeastern scored the first two buckets of the third quarter to extend its lead to 36-29. However, SFA finished the third quarter strong, outscoring SLU, 14-3, over the final seven minutes of the period to head into the final quarter with a 43-39 cushion.
The Lady Lions could never get back on top in the final quarter. A putback by Bell got Southeastern within one, 52-51, but SFA closed the game on a 13-6 run to punch its ticket to the Big Dance.
