HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team rallied for four runs in the seventh inning Saturday before holding off a late charge by Northwestern State in a, 7-3, Southland Conference win over the Demons at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Northwestern State (4-6, 0-2 SLC) wiped out a 3-0 Southeastern (9-2, 2-0 SLC) advantage in the top of the seventh, but the Lions responded immediately.
Demon relief pitcher Bryce Leonard (0-1) hit the first batter he faced,
TJ Salvaggio, with an 0-2 pitch in the back. Salvaggio advanced to second base on a wild pitch before
Conner O'Neal pulled a double to right-center field. Both scored on
Logan Walters' two-run single up the middle.
Walters was erased on a fielder's choice, but
Ben Robichaux launched a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center for his first home run of the season.
SLU picked up its first three runs of the game in the third on an RBI single by Salvaggio and a two-run single by
Peyton Woods.
Northwestern State threatened to tie up the game in the ninth. The first two Demon hitters reached base via a walk and an HBP before sophomore right-hander
Chase Ambrose (1-0) induced a flyout to center. Reliever
Nick Gisclair retired the next batter on a fly ball to right before a walk loaded the bases. Gisclair struck out the next batter to end the game.
Ambrose earned the win, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball in his second relief outing of the week. He did not surrender a hit, walking one and striking out one. Gisclair picked up his first save as a Lion, tossing 0.2 of an inning. Leonard suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in 1.0 inning of work.
O'Neal (2-for-3), Robichaux (2-for-4) and Woods (2-for-4) each contributed multiple hits to the winning effort.
