Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team improved to 14-0 in conference play with a 62-43 victory over UIW Saturday afternoon in the McDermott Center.
Arianna Patton (12 points) helped Southeastern (20-3, 14-0 SLC) remain undefeated and sweep UIW (14-9, 9-5 SLC) in the regular season. Patton finished shooting four-of-six from the field and four-of-six from behind the three-point line to fuel a spark of momentum for the Lady Lions on the road. The senior also dished out two assists and was the first player to reach double figures in the contest.
Cheyanne Daniels (12 points) also added in double figures with seven rebounds to lead the SLU on the boards. The Miami, Fla. native ended the game with a solid performance, shooting five-of-seven from the field and two-of-five from the charity stripe. Daniels secured her fourth consecutive game in double-digits to dominate in the paint for Southeastern to extend its longest winning streak in program history under SLU head coach
Ayla Guzzardo.
UIW chipped in the first two points on the board in the opening minutes, but the Lady Lions quickly locked in on the road as both teams battled to gain control of the game. UIW's short-lived spark of momentum was snuffed out as SLU went on a 16-point scoring run in the first quarter to deflate the Cardinals late in the first quarter.
Alexius Horne (eight points) and Patton sparked the run with two three-pointers from downtown to extend SLU's lead. Southeastern gained a 19-5-point advantage over UIW to close out the first quarter with the momentum in its favor. The Lady Lions defense jumped out on UIW and forced the Cardinals into seven turnovers in the first quarter alone. Southeastern earned 10 points in the paint and nine bench points as its second group, led by
Allasia Washington (nine points), chipped in quality minutes to claim the driver seat early.
SLU continued to make a statement on the road and held the Cardinals scoreless for nine minutes going into the second quarter. The Lady Lions worked to capitalize off UIW's mistakes in the second quarter and gained nine points of the Cardinals seven turnovers in the quarter. Myra Bell (eight points) battled to provide a spark of momentum for Incarnate Word in the second quarter, but Southeastern would not let up on its defensive pressure to limit the Cardinals to only eight points in the quarter. SLU's bench fueled its first half run as it raised havoc on UIW on both ends of the floor. The Lady Lions ended the first half with a 37-13-point lead over the Cardinals, shooting 51.9 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from behind the arch and 80.0 percent from the stripe.
Southeastern returned from halftime with the same mentality to take care of business on the road as it quickly went on a five-point scoring run in the opening minutes of the third quarter. UIW fought to cut into the deficit, the Lady Lions lead built in the first half allowed the team to comfortably remain in control in the quarter. SLU's defense continued to cause problems for the Cardinals as it forced the home team into five turnovers in the third quarter. Jorja Elliott (eight points) came alive to chip in five points, shooting one-of-one from the field, one-of-one from the three-point line and two-of-two from the free throw line in the third quarter. UIW produced a run late in the quarter to shorten the scoring gap as Southeastern only held a 15-14-point edge to close the third quarter, 52-27.
Brynn Lusby (10 points) and Destiny Whitaker (nine points) stepped in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals to chip in 12 points off the bench. UIW's bench fought to lessen the deficit late in the quarter, shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from behind the arch and 77.8 percent from the free throw line. As the Cardinals gained a 16-10-point edge in the fourth quarter, it would bring them no closer to overcoming the Lady Lions. With Southeastern's tenacious defense and dominance in the paint, UIW had no answer to defend its home court.
SLU finished the game with 26 paint points, 23 points off turnovers, and 22 bench points to claim its first regular season win at UIW under Coach Guzzardo. Southeastern shot 46.2 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from behind the arch and 50.0 percent from the free throw line to earn its 10
th road win of the season.
