TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 6 Texas A&M in the final game of the JoAnne Graf Classic Sunday morning at JoAnne Graf Field.
For the third time this season, SLU (11-6) went toe-to-toe with a top 10 team only to lose by a run, as Kennedy Powell drove in the game-winning run for Texas A&M (15-1) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Southeastern's last four losses have come to teams ranked in the top 10 with three of those defeats coming in walk-off fashion.
Maria Detillier and
Maddie Watson collected hits for SLU in the loss. Britney Lewinki (2-3) allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief to take another hard-luck loss.
Texas A&M took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning versus SLU starter
Hallie Burns. An RBI single by Mya Perez plated the first run with a single, then Amari Harper drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to give the Aggies a 2-0 advantage.
Burns and Texas A&M starter Kate Munnerlyn held the respective lineups at bay until Southeastern finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning.
Brilee Broussard replaced Watson on the base paths after a leadoff walk. The speedster eventually scored one out later on an error by Gracyn Coleman. Another Coleman error allowed
Kailey Dixon to come in to score, as SLU managed to knot the game at 2-2 without the benefit of a hit in the frame.
Lewinski and Aggie reliever Emiley Kennedy (5-1) matched zeroes until Texas A&M won it in the seventh. Singles by Frankie Vrazel and Kramer Eschete put runners on the corners before Powell's infield single gave the Aggies the win.
Southeastern will continue its 12-game road swing this week, when it heads to Youngsville, Louisiana to compete in the Mardi Gras Mambo. The Lady Lions will open tournament play with a 2 p.m. contest versus Maine Friday.
