Southeastern Falls Twice at No. 8 FSU to Open JoAnne Graf Classic

SLU (9-5) returns to action Saturday, facing FAMU in a 9 a.m. doubleheader

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team had its seven-game win streak snapped by No. 8 Florida State in a doubleheader sweep Friday evening at the JoAnne Graf Classic at JoAnne Graf Field.

In the opener, SLU (9-5) dropped a 5-0 decision to the Seminoles (11-1). The Lady Lions were held to four hits in their first shutout loss of the 2025 season. Southeastern used all six pitchers on the staff in the opener, as the Lady Lion pitching staff combined to hold a FSU team that has six run-rule victories this spring to seven hits and its lowest scoring output of the season.

Southeastern was on the verge of earning its first win over a top-10 team since 2007 in the nightcap, taking a 4-0 lead early and carrying a 4-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning. However, FSU tied the game in the seventh and then walked off a 5-4 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Cydnee Schneider led SLU at the plate in game two, hitting her first home run as a Lady Lion and finishing 2-for-4. Shenita Tucker and Brilee Ford also drove in runs for SLU. Britney Lewinski (1-2) was the tough-luck loser in the circle for Southeastern, scattering four hits in four innings of work.

Southeastern will continue tournament play Saturday with a 9 a.m. (Central) doubleheader versus Florida A&M.

Game One – No. 8 Florida State 5, Southeastern 0
SLU's Hallie Burns and FSU starter Julia Apsel (2-0) matched zeroes through the first two innings, before the Seminoles got to Southeastern reliever Lainee Bailey (1-1) in the bottom of the third inning. A two-run triple by Michaela Edenfield put the Seminoles up, 2-0.

Southeastern managed its first threat of the game in the top of the fifth inning, Singles by Cydnee Schneider and Colleen Kulivan put a pair of runners on with one out, but reliever Jazzy Francik retired Kailey Dixon and Shelby Morris to keep SLU facing a 2-0 deficit.

After FSU added a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Lions threatened again in the top of the sixth inning. Chloe Magee reached on an error, then moved to third when Maria Detillier doubled to put a pair in scoring position with one out. However, Francik retired Ford and Schneider to keep SLU off the board.

Florida State added two insurance runs in its half of the sixth, then Francik retired the Lady Lions in order in the seventh to secure her second save of the season and give SLU its first shutout loss since a 3-0 loss at McNeese last May.

Game Two – No. 8 Florida State 5, Southeastern 4 (9 Innings)
Southeastern wasted no time jumping on Francik in the top of the first inning. Ford singled home Magee and scored on an error to give SLU a 2-0 advantage. Scheilder then lined a home run over the right field fence to put the Lady Lions up, 3-0.

The Lady Lions added to their lead in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally. Morris doubled, stole third and scored on an RBI single by Tucker to put Southeastern in front, 4-0.

FSU took advantage of a SLU error to cut into the lead in the bottom of third, then Isa Torres doubled home a run in the fifth to pull the Seminoles within, 4-2, in the fifth inning.

Southeastern carried that two-run advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn't put the Seminoles away, as Torres and Kennedy Harp drove in runs to send the game to extra innings.

A fantastic double play by Morris ended FSU's threat in the eighth, but the Seminoles would walk it off against Lewinski in the ninth. Jaysoni Beachum singled home Krystina Hartley to give Florida State the doubleheader sweep.
