HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team extend its winning streak to five games, Lion senior guard Jakevion Buckley was named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.
 
The SLC weekly honor was the second straight for Buckley, as the Shelbyville, Texas native has been on a recent hot streak, scoring 20-plus points in three straight wins.
 
Buckley opened the week with a game-high 25 points in a key 69-60 victory at HCU. He added 23 points and scored the final eight points of regulation to help SLU force overtime Saturday versus Nicholls. In overtime, teammate Sam Hines Jr. sank a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer in a thrilling 84-81 Southeastern win.
 
Buckley averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest in last week's two wins. He's currently second on the team with 14.5 points per game and paces he team with 4.0 assists per contest.
 
Buckley and the Lions (17-9, 11-4 SLC) continue a four-game home stand Monday, hosting McNeese (20-6, 14-1 SLC) for a battle between the top two teams in the SLC standings.
 
Monday's showdown with McNeese tips off Monday at 6 p.m. in the University Center. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on 90.9 The Lion. Monday is Greek Night, as all Southeastern fraternity and sororities are encouraged to attend the Lions-Cowboys tilt.
 
Southeastern will also host East Texas A&M Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest in the University Center on ESPN+. Saturday is Senior Day and the senior class of Buckley, Hines Jr., Carlos Paez, Max Brackmann, Ryan Elzy and manager Jamar Gant will be honored prior to the game.
