HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out the 2025 Lion Classic with two more victories Sunday at North Oak Park.
SLU (8-3) extended its win streak to six games with Sunday's two wins, as the Lady Lions outslugged South Dakota (5-4) in a 11-6 victory in the opening game of the day. In the final game of the day, Southeastern broke open a scoreless pitcher's duel late on the way to a 4-0 victory over UTSA (7-3).
"I was really pleased with the resiliency our team showed all weekend," Southeastern head softball coach
Rick Fremin commented. "We fell behind in a couple of games, but were able to put together some quality at-bats against some good arms. Our pitching staff did a great job all weekend giving us a chance to win."
South Dakota used a six-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead in Sunday's opener. Southeastern answered by scoring a run in the third, a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to tie the score, 6-6, as
Lainee Bailey held the Coyotes at bay to allow SLU to rally.
Colleen Kulivan tied a single-game school record with her second triple of the game to lead off the sixth for the Lady Lions. SLU batted around in a five-run frame that broke the tie.
Hallie Burns (2-2) tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the win for Southeastern.
Kulivan was one of four Lady Lions with two hits, along with
Blair Walsh,
Chloe Magee and
Shelby Morris.
Maria Detillier led Southeastern with three RBI, while Morris scored three runs in the victory over USD.
In the nightcap, SLU starter
Britney Lewinski and UTSA's Katia Reyes (2-1) matched zeroes until the Lady Lions took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Consecutive RBI singles by
Shenita Tucker and Magee keyed a three-run frame to give Southeastern a 3-0 cushion.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Brilee Ford tripled and scored on a Kulivan ground out to extend SLU's lead to 4-0. That lead was more than enough for Lewinski, as the Shorewood, Illinois native struck out eight and scattered three hits in a complete-game scoreless effort, as SLU earned its fifth shutout win of 2025.
Southeastern will now play its next 12 games away from home, starting with a 6 p.m. contest at South Alabama Wednesday. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
