HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field on its way to a walk-off victory, 6-5, over Lindenwood to sweep the four-game series.
Consecutive hits by
Lakin Polk,
Ben Robichaux and
Parker Coley capped the comeback for Southeastern (4-0) which trailed Lindenwood (0-4), 5-2, entering the inning.
The rally started with a one-out walk by
TJ Salvaggio. He was erased on a fielder's choice as
Jude Hall reached base. Hall advanced to second base on a wild pitch before cleanup hitter
Mo Little was plunked by reliever Tanner Plaschke (0-1).
Despite the wind howling in from left field for the entirety of Sunday's non-conference contest, Polk lined a double over the head of the left fielder to plate both Hall and Little. After
Giovanni Licciardi entered as a pinch runner for Polk, Robichaux tied the game with an RBI double to right-center field. Coley ended the game with an RBI single to left. A strong throw to the plate nearly nabbed Robichaux, but Lindenwood catcher Brodie Short was unable to hold onto the ball while applying the tag.
SLU led early, scoring in the bottom of the first, but relinquished the lead in the fifth. Lindenwood spoiled the collegiate debut of freshman left-hander
Nik Toups, scratching across four runs before
Luke Lirette was called out of the bullpen to squelch the rally.
Ryan Brome cut the deficit in half, 4-2, with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the inning. Lindenwood added an insurance run in the eighth on back-to-back, two-out hits.
Junior right-hander
Nick Gisclair (1-0), a native of Prairieville, Louisiana, earned the win. He allowed one run in 2.0 innings of relief work, striking out four. Plaschke suffered the loss, four runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
Southeastern received scoreless outings from
Aiden Vosburg (3.0 IP),
Triston Todorowski (1.0 IP) and Lirette (2.1 IP) to cap the weekend.
Brome (3-for-4), Salvaggio (3-for-4) and Robichaux (2-for-5) turned in multi-hit performances at the plate.
