Sr. G Jakevion Buckley earned his first career SLC Player of the Week Award on Monday
FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team picked up its second Southland Conference weekly award of the season as
Jakevion Buckley earned the Player of the Week honor for his performance in the wins over Lamar and Incarnate Word, the SLC office announced on Monday.
Buckley, a senior guard from Shelbyville, Texas, averaged 23 points on 51.7 percent shooting in the two wins while also grabbing 7.5 rebounds, dishing out 3.5 assists, and coming up with 1.5 steals per game. His lone blocked shot of the week came in a crucial moment in a tight game.
He started his week against his former team, Lamar, where he scored 19 points while hitting five field goals and making nine of his 11 free throw attempts. He also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists in Monday's home game against the Cardinals, which SLU won, 81-79.
Buckley followed that up with a career night in the second game of the week against a team called the Cardinals, hitting a career high 10 shots on 15 attempts to finish with a career high 27 points at Incarnate Word. He grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists, came up with a steal, and had a block Saturday against UIW. His block, just his second of the season, helped preserve a one-point Lion lead with just over a minute left in the contest which Southeastern would eventually win by five, 71-66.
This is Buckley's first career SLC Player of the Week award, and the second won by a Lion this season after
Sam Hines, Jr. was voted Player of the Week back on Jan. 13. Hines, Jr. was also named a Player of the Week Honorable Mention last week.
Buckley and the rest of the Lions (15-9, 9-4 SLC), who have won nine of their last 10 contests, go for their fourth-straight victory while attempting to avenge the lone loss during that 10-game stretch on Monday night at Houston Christian.
Tip-off of Monday's contest against the Huskies (11-13, 8-5 SLC) is set for 7 p.m. in Sharp Gymnasium and will be televised on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast also available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
