HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team will suit up to continue Southland Conference play against UIW Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the McDermott Center.
Southeastern (4-8, 1-2 SLC) will take on UIW (6-6, 1-2 SLC) to start the week in its second conference road game of the season. Tuesday's matchup against the Cardinals will be televised on ESPN+ and live stats, provided by the hosts, can be accessed on the men's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net. The Lions finished 0-2 before the Christmas break, falling to East Texas A&M and LSU. Southeastern dropped a heartbreaking 70-69 loss against East Texas A&M at home before suffering a 78-65 loss against LSU to close out its non-conference slate. Three Lions finished in double-figures in their most recent contest against the Tigers led by sophomore Makhi Myles and junior Peter Hemschemeier with 15 points apiece. Myles provided a spark of momentum off the bench for Southeastern to also lead the team with six rebounds while Jalen Forrest contributed 10 points.
SLU is seeking to snap a two game losing streak with a strong return to conference play led by sophomore Jeremy Elyzee averaging 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Fifth-year senior Isaiah Gianes follows up with 10.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game to lead the team on the boards alongside Southeastern's other major contributors in Forrest (9.2 ppg) and Hemschemeier (7.8 ppg). The Lions rank fifth in the league in scoring defense (69.50) as they've forced opponents into 14.3 turnovers per contest to capitalize on 14.6 points per game.
UIW snapped its three-game losing streak with a 90-66 victory over Northern Arizona at home. Three Cardinals finished the contest in double-figures led by SLC Player of the Week Davion Bailey with 24 points, three assists and two blocks. Jordan Pyke (18 points) alongside Tahj Staveskie also stepped up with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds to contribute in the win. UIW recorded 32 points in the paint, 20 fast break points and 18 points off turnovers to defend its home court.
The Cardinals are led by Bailey averaging 21.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Bailey has closed out 10 games in double-figures this season to also lead the conference in scoring and three-point field goals made (3.91). Staveskie is another key factor for UIW this season, averaging 17.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The Cardinals also heavily rely on Pyke (13.3 ppg) alongside Harold Woods (8.6 ppg) as major contributors. UIW ranks second in the conference in scoring offense (83.17) and field goal percentage (47.6, rebounding margin (+6.00) and 3-point field goal percentage (40.1).
Concluding Tuesday's game, Southeastern will return to Hammond, America to host Stephen F. Austin Saturday, Jan. 3 at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's game against the Lumberjacks will be streamed on ESPN+.
