CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University indoor volleyball team got back in the win column with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon in the Dugan Wellness Center.
Southeastern (14-6, 6-2 SLC) bounced back from a grueling five-set loss at UTRGV Thursday with the win over the host Islanders (7-13, 3-5 SLC) in a rematch of the 2024 Southland Conference Tournament final.
Kyra McKelvey was on fire in the match, finishing with 20 kills and hitting .655 to lead the Lady Lion attack. Southeastern hit .339 for the match with
Peyton Stokley and
Ashley Richardson posting 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
SLU also held the Islanders to a .197 hitting percentage.
Ayla Klingenberg finished with six blocks to lead the Lady Lions, while
Lexi Gonzalez (15 digs) and Abby Bailey (12 digs) each posted double-digit digs.
Tatum Mason and Katelyn Krienke led TAMU-CC with nine kills apiece. Virginia Van Der Werff (37 assists) and Brooklyn Jaeger (21 digs) were the leaders for the Islanders.
The opening set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. McKelvey broke a 24-24 tie with a kill, then she and Klingenberg blocked Kenna Buchanan to close out the opening set.
Southeastern led by as many as seven in the second set, but the Islanders came back to cut it as close as two in the latter part of the set, before
India Bennett powered a kill to give SLU a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Lions would close out the match in three. McKelvey had five kills in the final set to lead SLU to the three-set sweep.
SLU will close out its three-match road swing Wednesday with a 1 p.m. midweek matinee at UIW. The match at the Cardinals will air on ESPN+.
