Southeastern Claims Spot on Mid Major Top 25

SLU is named to the Women's Mid Major Top 25 poll for the first time in program history

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team earned a spot at No. 25 in the Women's Mid Major Top 25 poll, as announced by College Insider Tuesday evening.

Southeastern gained its first appearance in program history within the Top 25 Mid Major Poll as it currently stands with an overall record of 16-3 and 10-0 in Southland Conference play. The Lady Lions made history for the second time this season in their most recent win over Houston Christian to obtain their longest 10-game win streak, under the leadership of head coach Ayla Guzzardo.

"Everything this program has accomplished is a testament of the hard work of our players and coaches," stated Coach Guzzardo. "This hard work started early in the summer and has continued throughout the year. This recognition is a blessing, but our work is far from over."

SLU received 45 votes in the Mid Major poll as the lone representative for the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions currently hold the top position in the league and stand first in scoring defense (54.63), turnover margin (+7.58), and assist/turnover ratio (1.05). Southeastern has forced opponents into 20.2 turnovers per game and leads the conference in steals (11.05) to rank 13th nationally in scoring defense and 18th in turnover margin.

In its 15th season, the Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Coastal Athletic, Conference USA, Horizon, Independent, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, Western Athletic.

Southeastern will remain at home for a highly anticipated game against conference rival Lamar Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in the University Center.

"I love the rivalry we have created with Lamar," said Coach Guzzardo. "There's so much respect between our two programs, that these games are always championship caliber games. Anytime you have two undefeated teams in our league competing, it's an exciting game and I'm hoping Hammond, America can come out and support."

Thursday's game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive. All sororities and fraternities are encouraged to represent your letters, bring the energy, and pack the University Center in support of the Lady Lions.
