HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team wraps up its four-game road trip, looking to extend its season-best three-game winning streak as the Lions head to Natchitoches to take on Northwestern State on Saturday and then Commerce, Texas for the Battle of the Lions with East Texas A&M on Monday.
Saturday's game between the Lions (9-8, 3-3 SLC) and Demons (7-9, 4-2 SLC) is set for 3:30 p.m., or about 30 minutes following the end of the women's contest, in Prather Coliseum while Monday's battle with the East Texas A&M Lions (2-15, 0-6 SLC) will tip off at 1 p.m. in The Field House.
Both games will be televised on ESPN+ while a radio broadcast will be available for both, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
Southeastern is currently enjoying its longest win streak of the season, having won three-straight contests. In its most recent contest, SLU took control in the paint to pick up its first win in Nacogdoches, Texas in 20 years, knocking off Stephen F. Austin, 66-59.
Jakevion Buckley led the way for the Lions with 16 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists in the win.
Brody Rowbury added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal while
Sam Hines, Jr. ended the day with 10 points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Hines, Jr., the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week, continues to lead the Lions this season with 15.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He's hitting 50.5 percent of his shots, including 48.3 percent from three-point range, and gives out 2.1 assists per contest.
Buckley scores 12.6 points per game and leads the team in assists, 4.2 per game, and steals, two a game. He connects on 48.7 percent of his shot attempts.
After scoring eight points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds at SFA on Monday,
Jeremy Elyzee is now averaging 10.6 points, on 50 percent shooting, and 4.9 rebounds a game. He leads the team in blocks with 12 on the season while picking up 1.3 steals each time out.
Kam Burton is the top deep threat, having made 34 three-point field goals on the year. He hit 41.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from distance while grabbing 2.4 rebounds a game.
Brody Rowbury has his shooting percentage up to 52.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range to average 7.3 points while grabbing 4.8 rebounds each time out.
The Lions score 71.9 points per game while hitting 45.1 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc as a team. SLU gives up 68.9 points per game on the season while opponents connect on 42.3 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from distance against Southeastern.
After starting the conference slate 3-0, including a big home win over Nicholls, Northwestern State has dropped two of its last three contests, including its most recent game, a 73-64 defeat at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Micah Thomas led the way for the Demons against the Islanders with 15 points, making him the only starter to score 10 or more points in Corpus Christi on Monday. Addison Patterson had nine points and seven assists while Landyn Jumawan also scored nine points. Love Bettis came off the bench to score 11 points for NSU against A&M-Corpus Christi. Willie Williams led the team with nine rebounds. Lado Laku blocked five Islander shots on Monday night.
Patterson is Northwestern State's top scorer and passer, averaging 12.4 points and 3.4 assists per game. He also has a team-high 21 steals and hits 43 percent from the field on the year while grabbing 5.3 rebounds a contest.
Jon Sanders II puts in 11.3 points per game while hitting 39.4 percent from the field. He's the team's top deep threat, having hit 27 three-point field goals on 39.1 percent shooting from long distance.
After his performance against the Islanders, Thomas is up to 10.7 points per game on 42.7 percent shooting. He is as big of a three-point threat as Sanders, having hit 26 triples on the year while shooting at a 36.6 percent clip from deep.
Williams is the team's top rebounder, grabbing 6.7 boards per game. Jerald Colonel, who played a season-low nine minutes and did not score at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, is the team's top shot blocker, swatting 2.7 opposing shots per contest. After his five-block performance against the Islanders, Laku now has 11 blocked shots on the season.
The Demons score 68.8 points per game while hitting 44 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from three-point range on the season. NSU's opponents average 72.3 points per game while connecting on 45.1 percent of shot attempts and 36.3 percent from long distance on the year.
East Texas A&M enters its game Saturday against New Orleans looking to end a five-game losing streak while still seeking its first Southland Conference win of the season. In its last contest, a 57-55 loss at Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Monday, Tay Mosher was the only Lion to get into double-figures in points, scoring 11 against the Vaqueros. TJ Thomas and Demarco Bethea both had nine points with Bethea coming off the bench to grab a team-high six rebounds. Chris Adlam doled out a team-high five assists at UTRGV.
Scooter Williams, Jr. is the lone ETAMU player averaging double figures this season, scoring 11.6 points per game. He's also tied for the team lead in assists with 2.2 dimes per game while his 15 blocked shots are the second-most on the squad. He hits on 39.4 percent of his shot attempts of the season.
Khaliq Abdul-Mateen averages 9.2 points on 34.5 percent shooting, including 31.6 percent from beyond the here-point arc. He has the most made threes on the season for ETAMU at 31 and leads the team in steals with 1.6 per game.
Bethea is the team's top rebounder, grabbing 4.5 per game while Josh Taylor secures 4.1 a contest. Bethea is the only ETAMU Lion shooting better than 50 percent this season, hitting 52.9 percent of his shot attempts entering this weekend's action. Taylor is the team's top shot blocker, having rejected 20 shots by ETAMU opponents this season.
Following Monday's game at ETAMU, Southeastern comes back to Hammond, America for the first of two four-game homestands over the final 12 games of the season. The homestand starts next Saturday as Incarnate Word comes to the University Center.
