SLU Squares Off Against East Texas A&M and Northwestern State

Southeastern prepares to close out its four-game road stretch against East Texas A&M and Northwestern State in week four of league play

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team prepares for a pair of road games as it faces East Texas A&M to begin week four of conference play Thursday evening at 6:30 in the Field House.
 
The game between Southeastern (12-3, 6-0 SLC) and East Texas A&M (4-10, 1-4 SLC) is the third consecutive road game for SLU. The Lady Lions will follow up Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip off against Northwestern State (7-7, 4-1 SLC) for the final contest of the four-game road stretch.

Southeastern finished week three of league play 6-0 defeating Stephen F. Austin 87-81, before taking care of business against New Orleans 83-53 for its fourth conference road win. The Lady Lions remain at the top of the conference, currently holding the longest winning streak in the league.
 
In its thirty-point win over New Orleans, veteran guard Alexius Horne led all scorers with 19 points and three assists over the Privateers while Southeastern sealed the game with three dominant quarters and 34 points off turnovers. SLU was also fueled by the production of Arianna Patton and Allasia Washington tied with 11 points to aid in the victory. Jalencia Pierre (five points) recorded a season-high nine assists while freshman Tyreona Sibley (six points) led the team with nine rebounds over the Privateers.
 
The Lady Lions are focused on continuing its six-game winning streak led by Horne averaging 15.8 points per game, followed by Cheyanne Daniels (9.1 ppg), Taylor Bell (9.7 ppg), Lexi Alexander (8.1 ppg) and key reserve Washington (8.2 ppg). Horne ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 50.0 percent from the field, and third in scoring. Pierre has made an impact on both ends of the court, ranking second in steals (2.5 spg), assist/turnover ratio (2.24) and fourth in assists (4.3 apg). Daniels currently leads the league at the free throw line, shooting 91.8 percent.
 
SLU remains in the lead for assist/turnover ratio (1.17) and turnover margin (+7.67), forcing opponents into 19.6 turnovers a game. The Lady Lions rank third in scoring offense (70.33), scoring margin (+13.40), and field goal percentage (44.3).
 
East Texas A&M finished 0-2 last week, suffering a 64-55 loss to McNeese before falling 69-68 to UTRGV on the road. The Lions have withheld its position at second in the conference in three-point field goals made (8.36) while standing third in blocked shots (3.6) and three-point field goal percentage (35.0). East Texas A&M is led by senior Jordyn Newcome averaging 16.0 points per game on 43.8 percent shooting from the field and 40.9 percent from the three-point line. Newsome has claimed 11 games this season in double figures with a season high 26 points during non conference play. The Lions also heavily rely on Cora Horvath (11.7 ppg), Jasmine Payne (9.4 ppg), and Hannah Humphrey (7.1 ppg) for balanced scoring.
 
Northwestern State has gained a four-game winning streak after defeating Nicholls 56-44 at home, before securing a 46-42 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road. The Lady Demons have gained momentum throughout conference play averaging 59.3 points per game this season while relying on its defense that ranks second in the league in scoring defense (55.93) and field goal percentage defense (36.0). Northwestern State is led by Mya Blake scoring 14.1 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest. Vernell Atamah (13.6 ppg) and Sharna Ayres (10.7 ppg) are also key contributors for the Lions this season as Atamah ranks second in free throw percentage (81.0) and Ayres fifth in three-point field goals made (2.07).
 
Concluding week four of conference play, Southeastern will return to the University Center to face HCU Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on 90.9 The Lion.
