FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team picked up its first conference weekly honor of the season as Sam Hines, Jr. was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week by the SLC office on Monday.
 
Hines, Jr., a senior guard from Marietta, Ga., earned the honor by averaging 22 points per game on 53.1 percent shooting, including 66.7 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line, in a pair of wins over Texas-Rio Grande Valley and New Orleans. He averaged 7.5 rebounds and three assists per game during the week as well.
 
He started his week by hitting six of his 13 shot attempts for 14 points in the 79-75 win over the Vaqueros. He had two of the game's biggest moments, a slam dunk over two UTRGV defenders and then a pull-up jumper with the shot clock buzzer sounding which gave Southeastern a four-point lead with 44 seconds remaining as SLU pulled away in the final minute for the win. He also had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal on Monday.
 
Saturday against the Privateers, Hines, Jr. went off for a season-high 30 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season as SLU dominated UNO, 91-71. He hit 11 of his 19 shot attempts against the Privateers, including two-of-three from three-point range, and was six-of-eight at the free throw line. He added three more assists and blocked a shot Saturday at UNO.
 
Hines, Jr. and the rest of the Lions (8-8, 2-3 SLC) are back in action Monday night in Nacogdoches, Texas for the first meeting with Stephen F. Austin State in five years. Tip-off of Monday's game against the Lumberjacks (8-8, 1-4 SLC) is set for 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game will be televised on ESPN+ while a radio broadcast will be available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
