HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team heads back out on the road for four-straight contests, starting Saturday at New Orleans and Monday at Stephen F. Austin, looking to build off the success of the win in its most recent game.
Saturday's game between the Lions (7-8, 1-3 SLC) and Privateers (2-13, 0-4 SLC) is set for 5 p.m., or about 30 minutes after the end of the women's game, in the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena while Monday's game against the Lumberjacks (7-8, 0-4 SLC) will tip off at 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Both games will be televised on ESPN+ while a radio broadcast will be available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institutions.
Southeastern is looking to build off of the 79-75 home win over Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Monday night, the team's first Southland Conference win of the 2024-25 season. SLU overcame a 15-point deficit and went on a 5-0 run which took up most of the game's final minute to turn a two-point lead into a seven-point advantage in the final 10 seconds and secure the win.
Jakevion Buckley scored 25 points in the win over the Vaqueros, the most he's scored in a game during his time on the Division I level.
Jeremy Elyzee followed his 21-point, 10-rebound performance on Saturday with 16 points, four rebounds, two steals, and an assist on Monday night.
Sam Hines, Jr. had 14 points against UTRGV with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
The Lions now have three players averaging double figures in points this season, led by Hines, Jr. who scores 15.1 points per game. He hits 50.3 percent of his shots, including 41.7 percent from three-point range, and is the team's leading rebounder as well, grabbing 6.7 boards a contest.
Buckley tallies 12.3 points per game on the year, hitting 47.1 percent of his shot attempts, while leading Southeastern in assists, with 4.0 dimes per game, and steals, with 1.9 thefts a contest.
Elyzee's outbursts against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV last week has him up to 10.6 points per game on 51.4 percent shooting while grabbing 4.9 rebounds a game. He also continues to lead the team in blocks with 11 on the season.
After missing Saturday's game due to injury,
Kam Burton returned to action on Monday. He's averaging nine points per game on 42.3 percent shooting while his 32 three-pointers are the most on a team, hitting 40 percent of his attempts from deep.
Carlos Paez, who is averaging 6.4 points per game on 45.9 percent shooting overall and 45.9 percent from three-point range this season, is just four points away from his 1,000
th career point while playing on the Division I level.
The Lions average 71.1 points per game while hitting 44.8 percent of their shot attempts, including 32.9 percent from three-point range. SLU's opponents average 69.5 points per game while Southeastern gives up 42.4 percent shooting on all shots and 29.8 percent from three-point range on the year.
New Orleans comes into Saturday's contest against the Lions having lost nine-straight contests with its last win being a 93-87 overtime win over Tulane on Nov. 22. In their last contest, the Privateers dropped a 97-83 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday. Theo Grant led all scorers in the contest with 25 points, 15 coming from the free throw line on 23 attempts, while James White scored 24 points. Dae Dae Hunter hit four three-pointers and ended the contest with 18 points in the loss. Jah Short filled up his stat line with six points, five assists, and four rebounds.
White leads the Privateers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.7 points and 7.4 rebounds a contest. He hits 41.8 percent of his shot attempts, including 35.3 percent from three-point range.
Short scores 10 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting and 32.6 percent from three-point range. He grabs 4.5 rebounds per game and leads the Privateers in blocks, with eight on the season, and steals, with 1.4 per game.
Hunter is the top three-point shooter for UNO, having hit 30 on the season at 39.5 percent from deep. J.R. Jacobs leads the Privateers in assists at 3.3 per game.
The Privateers average 66.7 points per game on the season while hitting 38.8 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from three-point range. UNO's opponents average 86.1 points per game and hit 47.7 percent from the field and 31.1 percent from three-point range against the Privateers.
Stephen F. Austin begins its weekend looking to end a two-game losing streak when the Lumberjacks head to Lamar on Saturday before hosting the Lions on Monday night. SFA is coming off of an 83-73 loss to Houston Christian last Monday. Keon Thompson led the Lumberjacks against the Huskies with 19 points while Dominic Pangonis came off the bench to finish with 17 points.
Thompson is SFA's leading scorer, averaging 14.1 points per game on 46.9 perent shooting and 30.8 percent from three-point range in just seven games played so far this season.
Matt Hayman averages 11.9 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting. He's the Lumberjacks' best three-point threat, having hit 20 this season at a 30.8 percent clip. He also leads the team in assists, at 2.5 per game, and steals, at 1.9 per game.
Chris Johnson averaged 10.7 points per game off the bench, but has only appeared in three games and hasn't played since early November.
Nana Antwi-Boasiako scores 9.6 points per game on 42.2 percent shooting while being SFA's top rebounder, averaging seven boards a contest. He's also blocked a team-high 16 shots on the season.
The Lumberjacks average 64.7 points per game while hitting 42.7 percent from the field and 25.4 percent from three-point range. SFA allows its opponents to score 63.4 points per game and hit 38.9 percent from the field and 28 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
Southeastern's final extended road swing of the season ends next weekend as the Lions head to Natchitoches to take on the Northwestern State Demons and Commerce, Texas for a date with the East Texas A&M Lions.
