Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team closed its four-game road stretch with a 2-1 setback against Tarleton State Thursday morning at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
Southeastern (1-4-1) held Tarleton State (6-3-3) scoreless for the entire first half, but could not match the Texans second half push of momentum. Lady Lion goalkeepers
Kendall Curran and
Anna Blankenship split responsibility in the net. Curran secured two saves around the net to close out the first half before being relieved by Blankenship to start the second half of the contest.
SLU maintained a strong defensive effort in the opening of the match holding the Texans to only five shots in the first 45 minutes. Both teams worked to control the pace of the game as the Lady Lions finished the first period with four shots and two shots on goal.
Tarleton State wasted no time taking the early advantage out of the halftime break to gain its first goal of the match. Freshman forward Sam Liaty scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Reegan Wagg and Una Hlynsdottir in the 57
th minute to secure a 1-0 lead.
The Texans doubled their lead six minutes later in the second half to turn the tide of momentum in their favor. Defender Kaitlyn Flanagan netted her second goal of the season with a kick to the bottom left of the goal to put Tarleton State up 2-0.
The Lady Lions bounced back midway in the second half from a corner kick that connected with
Nicole O'Neill to
Halli Roe. Roe recorded her first goal of the season in the 71
st minute to help the Lady Lions avoid the shutout. Southeastern worked to equalize the match late in the period, but would get no closer. SLU finished the match against the Texans with eight shots and four shots on goal led by senior
Katie Brown.
Southeastern will return to action Sunday in its conference opener against the McNeese Cowgirls for a 6 p.m. contest at Strawberry Stadium. Sunday's match will be televised on ESPN+. Youth sports teams are encouraged to wear their jerseys for Youth Sports Night and pack the stands. Fans are also encouraged to stay after the match to receive post-game autographs from the Lady Lions.
