, two-time Southland Conference Champion Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team will put its five-match win streak on the line in a mid-week battle with Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday, and will do so with a two-time Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week after
Keira Beverly was bestowed the honor again on Monday.
Beverly, a redshirt freshman from Mandeville, earned her second-straight SLC Defensive honor after helping guide the Lady Lions to a 3-0 week where Southeastern picked up wins over 2023 NCAA Tournament team South Alabama, as well as wins at the Battle for the Boot over Southern and Louisiana Tech. In the three matches, Beverly accounted for 14 total blocks with nine digs.
She had six block assists and two digs in the win over South Alabama on Tuesday afternoon. In the first game of the Battle for the Boot on Friday, she tallied seven digs and three blocks against Southern before ending her week with five block assists against Louisiana Tech. She has 32 total blocks on the season, proving to be a growing force at the net for the Lady Lions. This is Beverly's second career SLC weekly award.
SLU will need Beverly to continue her stellar play as the Lady Lions look to extend their current win streak out to six matches, welcoming in the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday to start the final week of non-conference action before Southland Conference play begins next week.
The match between the Lady Lions (5-4) and Ragin' Cajuns (2-6) is set for a 6 p.m. opening serve in the University Center and it will be televised on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast also available on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area, online at LionSports.net/ListenLive and LionUpRadio.org, and on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available on LionSports.net. Prior to opening serve, the team will unveil its 2023 Southland Conference Championship banner.
Southeastern won its fifth match in a row with a four-set victory over Louisiana Tech on Friday in Ruston to wrap up the Battle for the Boot.
Cicily Hidalgo was the top point scorer for the Lady Lions against the Bulldogs, putting up 18 points, all off kills.
Hannah Brewer and
Alexis Logarbo both had 15.5 points against Louisiana Tech while
India Bennett had 11 points.
Hidalgo is Southeastern's top scorer, averaging 3.6 points per set while getting 3.11 kills per set with five service aces and 20 total blocks on the season She also leads the team in digs with 91 total digs at a 2.6 dig per set clip. Logarbo is the next top scorer at 2.5 points per set with 2.11 kills per set and 26 total blocks.
Ashley Richardson is the biggest threat on the serve, with a team-best nine service aces while Brewer has eight. Richardson also has the most total assists at 169 on the year while
Gracie Duplechein has the highest assist per set average at 5.13. Bennett has the most blocks on the season with 39 total blocks and a 1.34 block per set average while Beverly has 32 total blocks and a 1.33 block per set average.
The Ragin' Cajuns enter Tuesday's match looking to end a four-match skid after losing all three of their matches at the Texas A&M Invitational in straight sets. In the loss to the host Aggies, ULL was led on the attack by Lauryn Hill, who had 10 kills on the day. Jazmine Gaston got to 7.5 points with seven kills and a block assist. Jaylynn McNeill got seven points on five kills and four block assists against Texas A&M.
Gaston is the Cajuns top scorer at 3.41 points per set, scoring 3.1 kills per set with five service aces. Cailin Demps is the next best scorer at 3.28 points per set on 2.97 kills per set. Megan Hawkins is the top server for ULL with 15 service aces on the season. Cami Hicks is the best defender at the net, having totaled 44 blocks on the season, mostly aided by McNeill who has 24 total blocks. Mio Yamamoto leads the back line with 138 total digs at a 4.6 dig per set clip.
After Tuesday's contest, the Lady Lions turn around and head to Lafayette for the Ragin' Cajuns Classic, but they will not play a return match against Louisiana-Lafayette there, instead seeing Florida A&M and Jacksonville State on Friday to wrap up non-conference action in 2024.
