HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team will open its home schedule Saturday, welcoming Eastern Washington for a 6 p.m. contest at Strawberry Stadium.
The game, sponsored by North Oaks Health System, between the Lions (0-2) and the visiting Eagles (1-1) can be seen on ESPN+ and will be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM). Fans are encouraged to help SLU Green Out the stadium and wear their best green Southeastern gear for Saturday's home contest.
Saturday will also be the Hall of Fame Game, as the 2024 Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame class of Amir Abdur-Rahim, Chris Laiche, Kevin Millican and Alex Young will be honored at halftime after being inducted at Friday's North Oaks Health System Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet.
Southeastern will be looking for its first win of the season after opening the fall with back-to-back losses to FBS foes Tulane and Southern Miss.
Last Saturday the Lions trailed USM, 14-10, at halftime, only to see the Golden Eagles outscore SLU, 21-0, in the second half.
Antonio Martin Jr. led Southeastern with 93 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the loss to the Golden Eagles. Through two games, the Lion newcomer is averaging just under six yards per carry and has 161 yards on the ground.
Eli Sawyer has started both games under center for the Lions, having completed 35-of-58 passes for 252 yards and a pair of interceptions.
Darius Lewis (12 catches, 95 yards) and
Jaylon Domingeaux (7-76) are the top pass catchers for SLU heading into the home opener.
The Lion defense forced two Golden Eagle turnovers Saturday and finished with nine tackles for loss.
KK Reno and
Donte' Daniels shared the team lead with seven tackles each with Reno forcing fumbles recovered by
Kaleb Proctor and
Khamron Ford.
Daniels and Reno lead SLU with 11 tackles each, followed by Ford, Proctor,
Coryell Pierce and
Keydrain Calligan with eight stops each.
Warren Peeples paces the Lion defense with two tackles for loss.
After opening the season with a 42-27 victory over Monmouth, Eastern Washington will be looking to bounce back from a 35-32 overtime loss to Drake last Saturday.
Kekoa Visperas leads the Eastern Washington offense and has completed 46-of-54 passes for 452 yards and five touchdowns. Efton Chism III is the Eagles' top receiver, leading EWU with 21 catches for 238 yards.
On the ground, Tuna Altahir (202 yards, 1 TD) has been the top performer for EWU. Michael Wortham has rushed for a pair of scores.
Derek Ganter Jr. leads Eastern Washington with 13 tackles, followed by Adam Cohen and Kentrell Williams Jr. with nine stops each.
Saturday is the closing game in a home-and-home series between Southeastern and Eastern Washington. Last year in Cheney, EWU held off the Lions in a 40-29 victory.
Saturday is the first of two straight home games for Southeastern, as the Lions welcome two-time reigning FCS national champion South Dakota State to Strawberry Stadium for a 6 p.m. Southland contest Sept. 21. The game between SLU and the visiting Jackrabbits will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard live in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM.
