HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team's preseason practice has seen a three-way battle at the quarterback position.
 
Veteran Eli Sawyer, along with newcomers Tanner Murray and Damon Stewart have all been vying to be the leader of the Southeastern offense when the season kicks off.
 
Sawyer has played in 21 games as a Lion, throwing for 3,030 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions on 234-for-378 passing. The Vestavia Hills, Alabama native is the team's most experience signal caller.
 
Murray comes to Hammond by way of Butler Community College, where he was an All-KJCCC performer as a freshman, throwing for 14 touchdowns and 1,644 yards. The Houston native signed with UTSA out of Langham Creek High School.
 
Stewart completed 129-of-200 passes for 1,655 yards and 11 touchdowns at Alabama State last fall. The Hattiesburg, Mississippi native was an all-state performer at Oak Grove High School.
 
"All three of those guys have had good days and bad days during camp," Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo commented. "All three are talented and experienced, so its all going to come down who can do the things that need to be done on a consistent basis."
 
Southeastern opens the 2024 season with a 7 p.m. contest at Tulane Aug. 29 on ESPN+ and the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
 
Southeastern Athletics Marketing and Student Promotions is offering SLU students an opportunity to travel to Tulane. Students wanting to make the ride to the Big Easy can pay their $5 deposit reserving their spot on the bus at the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office. The deposit will be refunded on the day of the trip. Those on the bus trip will receive free food and a ticket to the game versus the Green Wave.
