2024 Southeastern Football Position Preview: Linebackers

Scelfo praises SLU linebacking corps' versatility and speed

HAMMOND, La. – A versatile and fast group make up the Southeastern Louisiana University linebacking corps heading into the 2024 season.

SLU head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with the aggressive play of the Lion linebackers during fall camp.

"What stands out about our linebacker group is their speed," Scelfo commented. "They can all run and they're our best group at running to the football. A lot of times you'll see linebackers have limitations in pass coverage, but because of our speed at that spot, we feel great about where we are from that standpoint."

Southeastern's most experience linebacker in preseason All-Southland Conference selection Donte' Daniels. In his first year as a starter, he was an All-SLC selection after finishing second on the team with 87 tackles for the 2022 Southland champions. Last season he was limited to eight games due to an injury, but heads into the 2024 season at full speed.

Daniels is among several Southeastern linebackers that has had strong performances during the preseason.

"Donte' has had a good camp, but so have KK Reno, Jirrea Johnson Jr. and Jordan Okoye," Scelfo said. "Justin Dumas has made some great strides from where he was in the spring to where he is now. Colin Boldt has done some good things, as well as a couple freshmen in Stiles Guidry and Kyle Cannon."

Scelfo and his staff expect contributions from the linebackers in a variety of areas.

"We can see the improvement each day from that group," Scelfo commented. "We're going to be traveling a lot of those guys, because they're all valuable contributors on special teams."

Southeastern will practice at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the first day of school Wednesday. From that point forward, the Lions will begin practicing at 3:50 p.m. on weekdays during the season.
