HAMMOND, La. – A talented mix of veterans and newcomers highlights the Southeastern Louisiana University secondary heading into the 2024 season.
Southeastern head coach
Frank Scelfo is anxious to see the impact his playmakers on the back end will have this coming fall.
"We have good continuity within that group," Scelfo commented. "We feel really good about our depth in the secondary, especially at the safety position."
Coryell Pierce is the leading returning tackler in the secondary for the Lions and is one of several options Scelfo highlighted at the safety position.
"We're really excited about our options at safety," Scelfo said. "Coryell,
Talique Allen,
Zack Vicknair,
Carter Hanberry and
Cornelius Dyson are some of the guys who have helped us improve our depth at that spot. We're going to see a lot of those guys in that group get a lot of quality snaps."
Tylon Cooper and newcomer
Keydrain Calligan have been among the camp standouts at cornerback, Scelfo said.
"Tylon and Keydrain have separated themselves at the corner spot," Scelfo stated. "But guys like
Ralph Walker,
Tyler Mansfield and
Mike Mitchell are also fighting for playing time."
Southeastern starts five defensive backs and one of the standouts of the offseason has emerged for the Lions at the star position.
"
Khamron Ford had a phenomenal summer and has really played well during camp," Scelfo said. "Coryell has plenty of experience at that position and is versatile enough to help us at both the star and safety spots. Richard McNeely is another guy who has stepped up and had a really good fall camp. So we feel good about what we have at that position with those three guys."
Southeastern will practice at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the first day of school Aug. 21. From that point forward, the Lions will begin practicing at 3:50 p.m. on weekdays during the season.
