HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team held its final day of split-squad practices Thursday morning at Strawberry Stadium.
 
Since taking over the Southeastern program prior to the 2018 season, SLU head coach Frank Scelfo has opened fall camp with four days of split-squad practices. Scelfo says the benefits of additional reps were evident during this fall's split-squad period.
 
"We're excited to come together as a team for the first time Friday," Scelfo said. "During these first four days of split-squad practices, we were able to get a lot of quality reps. Guys had to know what to do and be ready to compete, because there was no hiding out here in these split-squad practices. We've been consistently crisp and efficient thus far and we look forward to that continuing tomorrow."
 
The split-squad practices also accelerate the acclimation of the newcomers to the Southeastern program, according to Scelfo.
 
"Our newcomers have done a good job," Scelfo said. "Some of the ones not from south Louisiana took a couple of days to get used to this heat. Our program has a strong culture and we embrace everyone who becomes a part of it. Our veterans have done a good job showing the new guys how we do things and it's always great to see those new faces assimilate into our culture."
 
Southeastern will practice at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the first day of school on Aug. 21. From that point forward, the Lions will begin practicing at 3:50 p.m. on weekdays during the season.
 
Southeastern opens the 2024 season with a 7 p.m. contest at Tulane Aug. 29 on ESPN+ and the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
