HAMMOND, La. – For the first time in fall camp, the Southeastern Louisiana University football team practiced in pads Wednesday morning in Strawberry Stadium.
 
Wednesday was the third of four days of split-squad practices for the Lions to open camp. Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased to see how his team acclimated.
 
"Sometimes we've had some anxiety that comes with putting on the pads for the first time," Scelfo commented. "We didn't have any of that today, which shows the type of maturing our young players have undergone since they got here for summer workouts."
 
Scelfo and his staff also continue to be impressed with the mental focus of his Southeastern squad.
 
"Assignment-wise, I thought we did a really good job today," Scelfo said. "We'll have to go back and look at the film and there will be things we need to correct, but I didn't see any glaring mental mistakes, which is encouraging."
 
Thursday will be the final day of split-squad practices before the team comes together fully for the first time this fall at Friday's 9 a.m. practice.
 
Southeastern will practice at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the first day of school on Aug. 21. From that point forward, the Lions will begin practicing at 3:50 p.m. on weekdays during the season.
 
Southeastern opens the 2024 season with a 7 p.m. contest at Tulane Aug. 29 on ESPN+ and the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
