HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team continued its opening week of fall camp Tuesday morning in Strawberry Stadium.
Tuesday's practice was the second of four days of split-squad practices. SLU head coach
Frank Scelfo has opened camp by breaking his team into two groups for the majority of the first week since taking over the Lion program in 2018.
"The main thing it does is allow players to get multiple reps when they might not in a full-team practice," Scelfo commented. "We see guys embrace the opportunity of putting their best on film, so we as coaches can better evaluate and gauge the strengths and weaknesses."
Tuesday's workouts saw Southeastern work on more game-type situations than it did on the opening day. Scelfo and his staff were pleased with the progress shown on the second day of camp.
"We were crisp today on both sides of the ball," Scelfo said. "The first day we had some anxiety and made too many mistakes. I thought in both practices today, we settled down in all phases. We executed well and that's something we'll have to do moving forward to create opportunities to be successful."
Wednesday will be another split-squad practice, but will be the first time in pads during fall camp.
"We had a lot of guys who had good days today, so it's important that we continue to stack good days," Scelfo stated. "We'll be in pads for the first time tomorrow, so it will be good to see how we adapt and adjust to adding something new to the process. It will be important for us to maintain our focus."
Southeastern will practice at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the first day of school on Aug. 21. From that point forward, the Lions will begin practicing at 3:50 p.m. on weekdays during the season.
Southeastern opens the 2024 season with a 7 p.m. contest at Tulane Aug. 29 on ESPN+ and the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
