The SLU volleyball team enters 2024 looking for its 2nd-straight SLC regular season title & 3rd-straight SLC Tournament Championship
HAMMOND, La. –The defending Southland Conference Champion Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team set its path to the goal of a second-straight SLC regular season title with the announcement of its 2024 schedule on Wednesday.
"This group is focused on paving their own way," said Southeastern head volleyball coach Jeremy White. "It's been refreshing to see our returners who've played significantly are still hungry and those who've been cheering from the sidelines are excited for the opportunity to earn a championship of their own."
The season's kickoff event is the Green & Gold intrasquad scrimmage, which takes place on Sat., Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. in the Pride Roofing University Center.
A road-heavy, non-conference portion of the schedule starts on Aug. 30 with SLU in Utah for the doTERRA Classic, which is being put on by BYU. Day one of that event sees the Lady Lions take on the host Cougars before ending the season's opening day against High Point. The weekend in Provo ends the next day with a match against Fairfield.
The season's second weekend finds Southeastern in El Paso, Texas for the three-day long Borderland Invitational, and once again, the Lady Lions begin competition by taking on the host institution, Texas-El Paso. The Lady Lions and Miners kick things off on Thursday evening. SLU's Friday in El Paso will see a rare conference opponent in a non-conference affair as the Lady Lions get their first look at Stephen F. Austin since the Ladyjacks announced a return to the Southland, the first meeting between the two teams since SFA left the SLC following the 2020 season. The three days in west Texas ends on Saturday morning with a brunch date with the Air Force Falcons.
Southeastern opens the home portion of its schedule with a two-game home stand, starting on Tues., Sept. 10 when the Jaguars of South Alabama come to the Pride Roofing University Center. Two days later, the Lady Lions host the Tigers of Jackson State in a midday affair before setting off to Ruston. Up in Ruston, SLU will face two tests on Fri., Sept. 13 as part of the Battle for the Boot, taking on Southern and the event hosts, Louisiana Tech.
That leads into the final non-conference home match of the season, a Tuesday night affair with the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns in the Pride Roofing University Center. The Lady Lions turn right around and make the drive across the Atchafalaya Basin and into cajun country to take part in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic. At the one-day event in Lafayette, SLU will take on Florida A&M and Jacksonville State on Fri., Sept. 20.
"I think it's important for us to continue challenging ourselves early in the season," continued White. "It lets us see kind of who we are and then expose the areas we need to improve in, or in the case of last year, make the changes necessary to go on another run."
Southland Conference play begins on Thurs., Sept. 26 as Lamar comes to the Pride Roofing University Center, the first of two-straight at home to kick off SLC play as, two days later, Incarnate Word makes the trip to Hammond, America.
Two straight road matches follow as the Lady Lions make the trip to New Orleans for a date with the Privateers on a Tuesday night to kick off the month of October. Two days later, Southeastern makes the trip west on I-10 to Lake Charles to battle McNeese.
SLU returns home for three in a row inside the friendly confines of the PRUC, starting with the return contest against the Privateers on Tues., Oct. 8, the first meeting with Nicholls on Thurs., Oct. 10, and the final meet-up with the Cowgirls of McNeese on Sat., Oct. 12.
A four-match road trip sees Southeastern face the return trip against Lamar, the first in-conference meeting against SFA of the year in SLU's first trip to Nacogdoches since October 2019, a run to Houston to face Houston Christian, and the second meeting of the season against the Colonels to wrap up the road trip on Halloween night.
SFA makes its first trip to Hammond, America since March 2021 on Sat., Nov. 2 to start a three-match home stand for the Lady Lions. The visit by the Ladyjacks precedes the rematch of last year's SLC Championship Final against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which takes place on Thurs., Nov. 7. The home stand culminates with the first meeting with the Vaqueros of Texas-Rio Grande Valley in more than a dozen years, and first as conference foes, on Sat., Nov. 9 for Senior Day.
"Southland volleyball got better with the additions of SFA and UTRGV," said White. "Both are great programs that will compete at the top of our conference and challenge out program to continue to get better if we want to achieve the success we've had the last two years."
The regular season ends with a pair of road games, starting with the battle of the Lions at Texas A&M-Commerce on Thurs., Nov. 14 before wrapping things up on Sat., Nov. 16 at Northwestern State.
Southeastern will then look to defend its home floor in order to capture its third-straight SLC Championship as the 2024 Southland Conference Volleyball Championship comes back to Hammond, America, running Nov. 21-24 at the Pride Roofing University Center.
The Lady Lions report to campus on Aug. 7 with fall practice opening the next day.
