LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to McNeese in the opening game of a Southland Conference series Friday night at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.
Southeastern (42-11, 17-5 SLC) is now locked in as the No. 2 seed in the 2024 North Oaks Health System Southland Conference Championships, scheduled for May 7-10 at North Oak Park on the SLU campus. McNeese (36-18, 20-2 SLC) secured its third straight SLC regular season title and the top seed in the league tournament.
The Lady Lions managed six hits against McNeese starter Shaelyn Sanders (19-9), but were shutout for just the second time this season.
Bailey Krolczyk and
Lexi Johnson led SLU with two hits each.
McNeese took the lead in the bottom of the second against Southeastern starter
Allison Brunson (3-1). Emily Phillips led off inning with a single and scored later in the frame by a sacrifice fly by Mariana Torres.
Torres extended the Cowgirl lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-run single by Torres staked the hosts to a 3-0 cushion.
SLU brought the tying run to plate twice in the final innings. Back-to-back singles by Krolczyk and
Audrey Greely put a pair on in the fifth, but Sanders recovered to retire
Colleen Kulivan to keep the Lady Lions off the board.
A Johnson single and a double by Krolczyk put two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Sanders fought back to retire Greely and Kulivan to close out the victory.
The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
The Lady Lions and Cowgirls will be the top seeds in a North Oaks Health System SLC Championships field that includes UIW, Nicholls, Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and HCU. Tickets are on sale at
