Day One Recap

LEXINGTON, Kent. – Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team member Esther Nwanze booked herself a spot in the national quarterfinal of the 400-meter hurdles on the second day of the NCAA Division I National Championships East First Round on Thursday at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Facility.

Ohyah Favour started the day in the 400-meter dash, where she ran in the fourth heat. She came across the line in 53.63 seconds, coming home in seventh place in the heat, but at the time had a qualifying time as she stood in 15th place on the overall leaderboard. However, that time would not hold a top-24 position after the final two heats completed, ending her season as she finished with the 27th fastest time of the day.

Then came Nwanze's turn in the 400-meter hurdles, and as she took to the start line, she knew what she had to do to advance as she was slated to run in the final heat of the day. And Nwanze delivered, crossing the line in 57.53 seconds, just 0.01 off of her own Southeastern school record, which she set as she won a silver medal in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships two weeks ago. That time earned her a 21st-place finish on the day, earning herself a spot in Saturday's National Quarterfinal.

The women's 400-meter hurdle quarterfinal race will be run Saturday at 7:25 p.m. EDT/6:25 p.m. CDT at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Facility, and Nwanze will need a top-12 finish in time to qualify for the national semifinal. Saturday's race will be live streamed on ESPN+ with live results available through the NCAA.

Should she finish with a top-12 time on Saturday, Nwanze would then move on to the national semifinal race, which takes place at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The NCAA National Championships runs June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on the campus of the University of Oregon.
