Fr. thrower Gabriel Lim makes his throw in the javelin competition at the NCAA East First Round
LEXINGTON, Kent. – Three members of the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team battled through a pair of weather delays but ultimately saw their 2024 season end on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships East First Round, held at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Facility.
The day started at the hammer throw competition, where
Terrell Webb gave himself a shot of advancing out as his second throw of the day went 62.75 meters (205'10"), which at the time put him in seventh place in the overall standings. However, after faulting on his third, and final, attempt, he would have to watch to see if his mark would hold. After the second flight of athletes was finished, and the first rain delay of the day was called, he was sitting in ninth-place, still good to advance, but just one round of throws into the third flight after the delay pushed Webb out of the top-12, ending his season. When all was said and done, Webb finished the day in 22
nd place.
Gabriel Lim was up next in the javelin throw competition. His first throw went 56.02 meters (183'9"), seating him into 11
th place after the first set of throws by the first flight of athletes, but that where the day's first weather delay also forced the suspension of this event. Once the rains cleared, Lim took his second throw of the day which went 55.34 meters (181'7") and when the second round was complete, he had slipped to 14
th-place. Needing to improve his mark to get a chance at advancing, he would come up a bit short as his final throw went 53.73 meters (176'3"), making his first throw his best of the day and when all three flights of athletes were complete, he had finished in 45
th place.
Southeastern's final competitor of the day was
Donroy Brown in the shot put. His first throw of the day went 16.81 meters (52'10.75"), seating him into 14
th after the first flight of athletes had all taken their first throws. He improved on his mark on his second attempt as the shot landed 16.81 meters (55'2") away, which moved him up into a tie for 12
th place after the second round. He faulted on his third throw, and by then, he had fallen back out of the top-12, ensuring his season had come to a close. He would finish the day in 43
rd place.
With the men's competitions now complete for Southeastern, the Lady Lions take center stage on Thursday as
Onyah Favour and
Esther Nwanze run in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, respectively, looking to advance out of the first round and into a Saturday national quarterfinal in their disciplines. Favour and the 400-meter dash is set to run at 7:25 p.m. EDT/6:25 p.m. CDT while Nwanze and the 400-meter hurdles is scheduled to go at 8:20 p.m. EDT/7:20 p.m. CDT.
