HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University student-athletes Hannah McCord and Xavier Madden claimed departmental awards in their respective fields of study at the university's Honors Convocation Wednesday afternoon held at Pottle Auditorium. 

McCord, a senior midfielder on the women's soccer team out of San Francisco, California was awarded the F. Dale Parent Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Sociology by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. The newcomer received the award in her first season in Hammond, America as a testament to her determination to impact her team on and off the field. 

"I was thankful to be nominated and receiving this award is a huge honor," McCord said. "Academic success is valued on our team and we hold ourselves to high standards, so to be able to uphold that within my department means a lot." 

McCord started all 18 games for the Lady Lions this season with three assists and three points to head Southeastern's offensive's counters. As the captain of her squad, she embraced serving on campus and the community while holding a 4.0 grade point average. McCord will graduate this spring with plans to continue her education by working towards a Master's of Science in Applied Sociology with a concentration in Globalization and Sustainability.

Madden, a senior sprinter on the SLU track and field team from Madison, Wisconsin was awarded the Director's Award in General Studies. Madden maintained a 3.83 grade point average and was named to the President's List the last two seasons. Madden plans to further his education at the Academy of Art as he seeks a career as a digital nomad consultant and global photography. 

"Being recognized for this award is special because it represents the holistic idea of what it means to be a student athlete," commented Madden. "It brings to light that you can have multiple endeavors in life beyond your sport." 

McCord and Madden will be among the Southeastern students having degrees conferred at the university's commencement exercises May 11 in the Pride Roofing University Center.
