HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team senior guard Hailey Giaratano was named to the Southland All-Academic First Team Friday morning, as announced by the conference.
Giaratano, a native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, claims this honor for the third consecutive season. Giaratano adds this achievement to her collection of awards attained this final season including Preseason All-Conference First Team, Player of the Week and First Team All-Conference. The fifth year senior reached 1,000 career points and aided the Lady Lions to the Semifinal of the SLC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship.
Southeastern finished the 2023-24 season with a 19-12 overall record and 14-4 record in conference play. Giaratano led SLU in scoring (12.2 ppg), assists (94) and minutes played (35.4) this season while maintaining a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. The veteran guard broke the Lady Lions career games played record and ranks first in program history for free throw percentage (80.0).
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport's championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have held at least a 3.5 GPA and have completed at least two years of athletic competition at the nominating school, including the current season.
