Sr. G/F Nick Caldwell (front page) & Jr. G Roger McFaralane (above) were named to the 2024 SLC All-Conference teams
FRISCO, Texas – On the eve of the start of the 2024 Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Basketball Championships presented by Explore Louisiana, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team found out that two of its own earned spots on the All-Conference teams for their play this season with
Nick Caldwell being named first team and
Roger McFarlane earning a spot on the second team, the SLC announced on Saturday.
Caldwell, a senior from Prairieville, La., picked up his first All-Conference postseason honor as he was voted to the first team after being named to the Preseason All-Conference second team. He led Southeastern in scoring on the season, averaging 15.5 points on 53.2% shooting while hitting 42.3% of his three-point attempts. He also led the team in blocks at 0.9 a game. Caldwell had a stretch during the season where he was named player of the week by at least one organization, which included two from the Southland Conference, two from the Louisiana Sport Writers Association, and one from the United States Basketball Writers Association. During that stretch, he scored his first 30-point game, scoring exactly 30 points at home against Lamar, the most points by a Lion in a game this year.
McFarlane, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., also earned his first postseason All-Conference honor after he was picked All-Conference Preseason First Team. He led the team in scoring and rebounding for most of the season, ending the year averaging 14.7 points per game while still holding the spot as top rebounder at 8.6 boards per game. He notched a team-best 10 double-doubles on the year with his best scoring performance coming in a 24-point outing at Auburn while he gathered a career-high 17 rebounds in the home game against New Orleans. McFarlane ended the regular season shooting 41.3% overall from the field and 33.9% from beyond the three-point arc.
Caldwell, McFarlane, and the rest of the Lions (15-16, 10-8 SLC) look to make a run through the 2024 Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Basketball Championships presented by Explore Louisiana as its fifth-seed, starting on Sunday night when they take on New Orleans. Tip-off of Sunday's game against the eighth-seeded Privateers (9-22, 4-14 SLC) is set for 5 p.m. in the Legacy Center in Lake Charles. Sunday's first round game will be live streamed on ESPN+ while a radio broadcast will be available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the Southland Conference.
