Southeastern Opens Home Stand With 6-2 Win Over USM

SLU (16-5) heads into SLC play on a four-game win streak

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out its pre-Southland Conference schedule with a 6-2 victory over Southern Miss Wednesday night at North Oak Park.

Southeastern (16-5) shook off an early 2-0 deficit and rallied for its fourth straight victory. Southern Miss fell to 8-10 overall with the loss.

Four Southeastern pitchers – Ellie DuBois, Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux, Cera Blanchard (6-1) and Chloe Bennett – combined to hold USM to three hits.

Chloe Magee and Maria Detillier each had two hits to lead Southeastern, while Colleen Kulivan drove in a pair of runs to lead the Lady Lion offense. Southeastern's defense did not commit an error in the win, while USM was plagued by five errors.

"We saw a lot of good things tonight in all phases coming off a great weekend in Oxford," Southeastern head coach Rick Fremin said. "We were pleased to keep the momentum going into our first Southland Conference series against an impressive UIW team."

The game was scoreless until USM took the lead in the top of the third inning. Hannah Borden hit a two-run home run well over the left centerfield fence to extend the lead to 2-0.

Southeastern finally got to Southern Miss starter Loganne Stepp in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maddie Watson singled and Lexi Johnson drew a walk to put a pair on with one out. One out later, Kulivan lined a singled into left field to clear the bases and tie the score at 2-2.

SLU took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Magee singled, then Detillier drew a walk to chase Stepp. Reliever BrookLynn White then walked Bailey Krolczyk and Maddie Watson to force in the go-ahead run.

Southeastern added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Cam Goodman singled home Audrey Greely and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ka'Lyn Watson. Two errors led to Magee scoring and extending the Lady Lion lead to 6-2. Bennett sat down the Golden Eagles in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
