SLU Takes Down Ole Miss, UAB on Day Two of Ole Miss Classic

Win over the Rebels is third over a Power 5 this season for SLU (14-5)

OXFORD, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team claimed a pair of victories on day two of the Ole Miss Classic Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Southeastern (14-5) opened the day with a 4-1 win over UAB (9-10). In the nightcap, SLU earned its third win over a Power 5 opponent this season, outlasting Ole Miss (13-5) in a 9-4 extra-inning victory.

Ellie DuBois (5-2) went the distance in the circle in the win over the Blazers, striking out six and scattering five hits. Sophia Stoddard and Maria Detillier each had two hits to lead the Lady Lions.

Lexi Johnson's two-run home run was the key blow in a five-run eighth inning that broke a 4-4 tie in the win over Ole Miss. Johnson was 3-for-4 in the win over the Rebels – the program's first win over an SEC opponent since an 8-0 win at Texas A&M in 2020. Johnson and Maddie Watson each drove in two runs, while Maria Detillier and Ka'Lyn Watson had two hits apiece.

Allison Brunson (1-0) earned her first win in a Southeastern uniform, allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings of relief.

Southeastern will look to close out the tournament on a high note, facing Kent State at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Game One – Southeastern 4, UAB 1
UAB took the lead off DuBois in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI triple by Lindsey Smith staked the Blazers to a 1-0 lead.

Southeastern took the lead for good in the top of the third against UAB starter Leigha Kirby (3-5). Consecutive RBI singles by Chloe Magee and Detillier put SLU up, 2-1.

An RBI single in the fourth by Stoddard and an unearned run in the sixth closed out the scoring for the Lady Lions.

DuBois gave up a leadoff double to Hannah Dorsett in the bottom of the sixth, but was never threatened after that. The Shreveport, Louisiana native struck out four in a row on the way to retiring the final six batters of the game and earning her team-high fifth win of the season.

Game Two – Southeastern 9, Ole Miss 4 (8 Innings)
A wild pitch by SLU starter Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux in the bottom of the first gave the Rebels an early 1-0 lead, but SLU came right back to tie it up, as pinch runners Faith Kivett and Brilee Broussard executed a double steal to tie the score.

Colleen Kulivan singled to lead off the Lady Lion third, then scored on a Rebel error to give SLU a 2-1 lead. Ole Miss answered in the bottom of the fourth, as a two-run home run by Paige Smith chased Comeaux and gave the Rebels a 3-2 cushion.

Ole Miss tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Southeastern came back again in its half of the sixth. A two-run single by Maddie Watson knotted the score at 4-4.

The score would remain deadlocked, though Ole Miss threatened to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith doubled with two outs to put the winning run in scoring position, but Brunson recovered to retire Angelina DeLeon to force extra innings.

Magee was placed on second to start extra innings and scored on an RBI single by Detillier. Ka'Lyn Watson then singled home Detillier for the second run of the inning. After Maddie Watson's sacrifice bunt moved Ka'Lyn Watson into scoring position, Johnson powered her third home run of the season over the centerfield fence to give SLU an 8-4 lead.

Later in the inning, Audrey Greely singled and later scored on a wild pitch to send the Lady Lions into the bottom of the eighth inning with a 9-4 lead.

DeLeon was placed on second and Brunson walked Jalia Lassiter to put a pair of runners on with one out. However, the Jena, Louisiana native recovered to retire Jaden Pone and Delaney Rummell to close out her first win as a Lady Lion.
