Southeastern Continues Improvement During Spring Practice

Scelfo pleased with SLU ball security on offense, swarming defense

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team continued spring practice Thursday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern head football coach Frank Scelfo singled out both sides of the ball for the strides made during the first 11 spring practices.

"On offense, we turned the ball over entirely too much last fall," Scelfo commented. "We've been emphasizing ball security and it's paying off, as we're not turning the ball over during out team periods.

"Defensively, we have been concentrating on getting all 11 hats to the football," Scelfo added. "When we go watch film, that's what we're seeing. We're really excited about the progress on both sides of the ball."

Scelfo also praised his team for the energy and competitiveness his players have brought throughout the spring. The seventh-year SLU head coach is eager to see his team finish strong over the final four spring workouts.

"We want to see consistency across the board," Scelfo said. "We want not only our first unit, but our second and third units to be able to execute, because at this point of spring we shouldn't have to coach guys on assignments when we're on the practice field. The vast majority of our guys know what they're doing and are able to play fast because they've taken what they've learned in the meeting room to the field. Now those guys who are good assignment-wise have to concentrate on sharpening their technique."

Southeastern will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:50 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. through March 23.

Southeastern opens the 2024 season at Tulane. The nonconference slate also includes visits to Southern Miss and Tarleton State, while Eastern Washington and two-time defending FCS national champion South Dakota State visit Hammond.

Southland Conference foes UIW, Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce come to Strawberry Stadium this fall, while the Lions will travel to Nicholls, McNeese, HCU and Lamar in league play.
