YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team tied a single-game school record for triples and every positional starter had at least one hit in a 13-0 victory over Green Bay in the 2024 season opener for both teams Thursday night at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
Southeastern (1-0) opened the season with a 16-hit performance to start the five-game Mardi Gras Mambo on a high note. The Lady Lions broke open the game with an eight-run third inning.
Ka'Lyn Watson,
Chloe Magee,
Maria Detillier,
Bailey Krolczyk,
Lexi Johnson,
Maddie Watson and
Addison Contorno each had two hits apiece for SLU. Krolczyk hit her first home run of the young season, while she, Contorno and Johnson each tripled. It marked the sixth time in Southeastern had three triples in the same contest.
Krolczyk and Contorno led Southeastern with three RBI each. Magee, Krolczyk, Contorno and
Audrey Greely each had two runs scored apiece.
Cera Blanchard (1-0),
Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux and
Allison Brunson combined to hold Green Bay to three hits. Blanchard struck out three in three scoreless innings, while Comeaux fanned a pair in a perfect fourth.
The Lady Lions jumped on top in the bottom of the first versus Phoenix starter Paeton Kring (0-1). Back-to-back one-out singles by Magee and Detillier set the table for Krolczyk. The reigning Southland Conference Player and Hitter of the Year lined a 3-2 pitch over the right centerfield fence to give SLU a 3-0 advantage.
Green Bay loaded the bases with a single, an error and a walk in the top of the second, but Blanchard forced Kaylin Fahy to hit a comebacker to the circle to end the frame unscathed.
The Lady Lions added to their lead in the bottom of the second. After Kring hit Greely, Contorno tripled off the right field fence in her first collegiate at-bat to plate Greely. One out later,
Ka'Lyn Watson legged out an infield single to score Contorno and stake SLU to a 5-0 lead.
Any chance of a Green Bay comeback was ended in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back triples by Krolczyk and Johnson started a run of nine consecutive hits for Southeastern. The Lady Lions sent 12 to the plate in an eight-run frame to take a 13-0 lead.
SLU maintained the advantage, though Green Bay was able to load the bases versus Brunson in the top of the fifth inning. The Jena, Louisiana native forced Samantha Saloun to line out to
Faith Kivett at second to preserve the shutout and secure the run-rule win.
Day two of the Mardi Gras Mambo will see Southeastern take on Providence at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest versus UT Arlington.
