RUSTON, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team's perfect start to the 2024 season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Louisiana Tech Wednesday evening at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.
Southeastern (5-1) suffered its first loss, as five of the host Bulldogs' six hits were doubles. Louisiana Tech (2-0) remained unbeaten on the season, as starter Allie Floyd (1-0) struck out seven Lady Lions to back up her offense.
Ka'Lyn Watson led Southeastern with a pair of hits, while
Maria Detillier drove in SLU's lone run.
Louisiana Tech ended Southeastern's scoreless streak at 32.2 innings to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. A two-run double by Karli Sellers staked the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead and chased SLU starter
Chloe Bennett (1-1) from the game.
Southeastern answered in its half of the third. Consecutive singles by
Colleen Kulivan,
Ka'Lyn Watson and
Chloe Magee loaded the bases with one out, then an RBI groundout by Detillier scored Kulivan and cut the Louisiana Tech advantage to 2-1.
Louisiana Tech used a two-out rally to get the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sellers' second double of the game started the rally, then Sellers scored on an RBI single by Brooke Diaz to put the Bulldogs up, 3-1.
LTU added to its advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nicole Hammoude led off the inning with a double, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aubree Seaney to put the Bulldogs ahead, 4-1.
Floyd retired five straight Lady Lions before
Audrey Greely and
Cam Goodman legged out consecutive one-out infield singles in the seventh. Goodman got gunned out trying to steal second, then Floyd struck out
Addison Contorno to close out the victory.
The Lady Lions will open their 2024 home schedule by hosting the Lion Classic at North Oak Park. SLU opens tournament play Friday at 4 p.m. versus Syracuse (3-2). Saturday will see Southeastern take on Maryland (2-3) at 1 p.m. and Southeast Missouri (3-2) at 5 p.m. Live stats will be available at
