HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will return to action to close out week one of conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against McNeese at the Legacy Center.

The Lady Lions gained a 58-54 victory in its conference opener versus Nicholls Wednesday evening on the road. Southeastern secured a 21-11-point advantage over the Colonels in the third quarter fueled by its defense that forced Nicholls into 19 turnovers. SLU claimed 26 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers and nine points off second chance opportunities.
Jalencia Pierre showcased a solid performance with a season-high 18 points, shooting 5-10 from the field and 8-12 from the free throw line with four assists.
Alexius Horne followed up with 16 points, six assists and two blocks while
Kaili Chamberlin (eight points) produced a spark off the bench with four steals to aid in the win.
Southeastern is seeking to close out week one of conference play undefeated on the road. The Lady Lions have pressured their opponents into 19.3 turnovers per game to obtain 20.8 points off turnovers. SLU continues to rank first in the conference in turnover margin (+6.80) and assist/turnover margin (1.04). After the recent win, Southeastern improved to third in the conference in scoring defense (56.10), scoring margin (+8.70) and field goal percentage (41.7). Lexi Alexander stands third in the league in defensive rebounds (5.6 rpg) while Pierre tied for fifth in steals (2.3 spg) and assists (3.7 apg).
Cheyanne Daniels has been a dependable for SLU at the free throw and ranks first in the conference in free throw percentage (92.6).
McNeese suffered a 92-41 loss to Oklahoma State Monday, extending its two-game losing streak on the road. Sophomore Paris Guillory led the Cowgirls with 15 points, shooting 3-7 from the three-point line and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Tyrielle Williams followed up with 10 points as the junior shot 50.0 percent from the field and three-point line. McNeese is led by Guillory who averages 13.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds. Mireia Yespes (9.3 ppg) leads the team on the boards with 6.7 rebounds per game alongside Lyla Kahrimanovic (8.2 ppg) who are also key contributors for the Cowgirls this season. McNeese ranks second in the conference in steals (12.0 spg) and third in the conference rebounding margin (+3.82) and blocked shots (3.64).
Concluding Saturday's game, Southeastern will return to the University Center to face new conference member UTRGV Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
