HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will return to action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to begin Southland Conference play against Nicholls at the David R. Stopher Gymnasium.

Southeastern came up short in its last non-conference game of the season, falling 70-65 to Houston on the road. The Lady Lions could not hold on to their lead after a fourth quarter surge by three Cougars ending in double figures.
Alexius Horne and
Lexi Alexander tied with 18 points to lead the team in scoring, both shooting 6-12 from the field.
Cheyanne Daniels also contributed double-digit scoring with 10 points, finishing 60.0 percent from the field and 100.0 percent from the charity stripe. Alexander led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while
Jalencia Pierre dished out a season-high seven assists.
SLU is looking to make a strong conference debut this week. Southeastern's defense has suffocated opponents forcing 19.3 steals a game and capitalizing off opponents' mistakes with 21.3 points off turnovers. The Lady Lions rank first in the conference in turnover margin (+6.56) and assist/turnover ratio (1.04). Daniels stands second in the conference in free throw percentage while Pierre ranks third in assist/turnover ratio (1.74).
Nicholls extended its four-game winning streak with a 67-56 victory over Mississippi Valley State to finish its non conference schedule. Deonna Brister and Malaya Jones tied to lead all scorers with 16 points. Elli Garnet ended with 13 points and 12 rebounds to secure her first double-double of the season. The Colonels are led by two-time SLC Player of the Week Tanita Swift who averages 15.1 points per game, 3.0 assists and 2.8 steals. Swift has produced double figures for Nicholls in six-of-nine games so far this season and ranks second in the conference in scoring and steals. Brister (11.7 ppg) and Britiya Curtis (8.3 ppg) are also key contributors for the Colonels, while Emani Burks (5.2 ppg) ranks third in the conference in blocked shots (1.3) to protect the paint.
Following Wednesday's game, Southeastern will continue on the road to play McNeese Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Legacy Center.
