Sr. G Jakevion Buckley averages 12 points & 4.1 assists after 7 games this season
HAMMOND, La. – Now finished with its first international trip after going 1-1 in the Cancun Challenge in Mexico, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to Louisiana to finish its 10-game road trip, starting on Monday night at Tulane.
Monday's game against Tulane (4-4) will be the seventh of 10-straight games away from Hammond, America for Southeastern (3-4), but the remainder of the trip will keep the Lions within the Louisiana state borders. Tip-off of Monday's game against the Green Wave is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
The game against Tulane will be televised on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast also available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
SLU ended the Cancun Challenge strongly, finishing with a 23-7 run over the final nine minutes to pull away for a 76-60 win over North Dakota in the final game of the trip to Mexico.
Sam Hines, Jr. led the Lions with 17 points in the win over the Fighting Hawks while
Brody Rowbury had 13 points and eight rebounds and
Jakevion Buckley filled his stat line with 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists against North Dakota.
Hines, Jr. continues to be the top threat for Southeastern this season, averaging 14.3 points on 46.4 percent shooting while hitting 40 percent from three-point range. He also grabs 7.1 rebounds a game, which also leads the team, and dished out 2.7 assists per contest. He's only one off the team lead in blocked shots this season with five while his 10 steals make him one of two Lions with double-digit steals through seven games this season.
Buckley is the next biggest threat for Southeastern as the top ball-handler, averaging 12 points per game on 45.5 percent shooting while handing out 4.1 assists per game. He also secures three rebounds a contest and is the only other Lion with double-digits in steals on the year with a team-leading 13 thefts.
Jeremy Elyzee, who missed the North Dakota game after suffering an injury at the end of the Gardner-Webb game a day earlier, scores 11.5 points per game on 56 percent shooting. He secures 4.7 rebounds and leads the Lions in blocks with six on the season.
Brody Rowbury scores 8.5 points while grabbing 5.7 rebounds.
Kam Burton is the top deep threat with his 15 made three-pointers leading the Lions while hitting at a 40.5 percent clip from deep.
Southeastern scores 71.1 points per game so far this season. SLU hits 44.2 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three. Lion opponents score 68.4 points per game and hit 41.5 percent from the field but just 26.6 percent from three on the season.
Tulane also spent its Thanksgiving week in Mexico at the Cancun Challenge. However, after winning the on-campus game at home over Bethune-Cookman, the Green Wave went 0-2 in Cancun, dropping a one-point decision to Wyoming before ending the event with an 89-66 loss to Belmont.
Asher Woods led the Green Wave in the loss to Belmont with 16 points while Rowan Brumbaugh and Mari Jordan each had 13 points. Jordan had six rebounds while Brumbaugh added five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Gregg Glenn III grabbed a team-high eight rebounds against the Bruins while Kam Williams had four assists, which led Tulane in that category against Belmont.
Kaleb Banks, who missed the game against Belmont after scoring 11 points a day before against Wyoming in Cancun, is Tulane's top scorer at 16.7 points per game on 48.6 percent shooting and 45.2 percent from three. He also leads the team in rebounding at 8.3 boards per game and has blocked a team-high nine shots.
Brumbaugh is the next top scorer for Tulane this season, averaging 12.6 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting while his five assists a game leads the Green Wave.
Woods is the lone other player averaging double-digits in points, scoring 10 a game on 39.3 percent shooting.
Jordan averages 9.4 points on 44.4 percent shooting and Williams scores 9.3 points on 44.3 percent shooting with five rebounds a game.
Tulane averages 74.4 points per game while hitting 41.4 percent of its shots through eight games. The Green Wave also hit 33.8 percent from three on the year. Tulane opponents score 66.9 points per game this year and are held to 37.1 percent shooting overall and 30.1 percent from three-point range.
Conference play awaits the Lions after Monday's game at Tulane. Southeastern opens Southland Conference action on Thursday night in Thibodaux, taking on Nicholls, to wrap up this week's action.
