HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team begins its month away from home on Sunday in Birmingham with a date against the UAB Blazers at Bartow Arena.
Sunday's game between Southeastern (1-0) and UAB (1-1) will tip-off at 2 p.m. Sunday from Bartow Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN+ while a radio broadcast will also be available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
The Lions are looking to build off of a very successful season opener on Monday where they were 91-53 winners over William Carey. SLU hit better than 50 percent from the field in the win over the Crusaders, including nearly 40 percent from three. On the defensive side of the ball, Southeastern held William Carey to just 30 percent from the field and 21 percent from above the arc while forcing the Crusaders into 14 turnovers.
Sam Hines, Jr. led the way for the Lions with 21 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. He hit eight of his 12 shot attempts, including all three of his three-point attempts, and was two-for-two at the charity stripe.
Jakevion Buckley came through with 18 points as he hit five of his nine shot attempts on Monday while also hitting eight of his nine attempts from the free throw line. He dished out a game high five assists from his point guard position while also grabbing two rebounds.
Kyle Edison came off the bench and splashed in 15 points to go with six rebounds. He was five-of-eight from the field and hit two of the four shots he took from beyond the arc.
Jeremy Elyzee also made an impact in his SLU debut, scoring 12 points as he hit four of the seven shots he took with one of his makes coming from deep. He also had three rebounds and a pair of assists.
After dropping a tough 67-62 decision to Vermont to open the season, UAB rebounded in a big way on Thursday, picking up a 98-84 win over Southern Miss. to even up its season-opening, three-game homestand at 1-1.
The Blazers shot 51 percent in the win over the Golden Eagles, though UAB hit just 28 percent from long distance. USM equaled UAB in terms of shooting, hitting 51 percent from the field as well, and was even better from distance, hitting 45.5 percent from three. However, the Blazers forced the Golden Eagles into 22 turnovers which UAB got 41 points off of.
Christian Coleman and Yaxel Lendeborg both finished the game against USM with 21 points. Coleman added nine rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks to his stat line while Lendeborg had six assists, five rebounds, and four steals against the Golden Eagles.
Tyren Moore finished the game Thursday with 18 points, an assist, a rebound, and a steal. He hit four of UAB's seven threes in the game.
Tony Toney and Ja'borri McGhee scored 10 points each on Thursday.
Lendeborg is averaging a double-double through two games this season at 21.5 points and 10 rebounds a game, leading UAB in both categories. He's also getting three assists, three steals, and 2.5 blocks a game.
Coleman is hitting 76.5 percent of his shot attempts through two games this season to get to 15 points per game. He's also at 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks through two games.
Moore is the last of UAB's lading scorers at 10 points per game while hitting 43.8 percent from the field. He's hitting 50 percent from three on the year.
Alejandro Vasquez averages 9.5 points while McGhee averages nine points on 57.1% shooting.
This is just the second-ever meeting between the Lions and Blazers, the first coming during the 2020 season, which UAB won 84-59.
It'll be a short turnaround for the Lions, regardless of Sunday's result, as the team will make a stop on the way home from Birmingham in Starkville, Miss. for a game Tuesday night against Mississippi State (2-0).
