HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team has gone down Mexico way to wrap up its participation in the Cancun Challenge on Thanksgiving week, taking on Gardner-Webb on Tuesday before playing an opponent to be determined by Tuesday's results on Wednesday at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
Tuesday's game between the Lions (2-3) and Runnin' Bulldogs (2-3) is set for 12:30 p.m. EST/11:30 a.m. CST just outside of Cancun in Puerto Aventuras. Wednesday's game will see Southeastern take on either the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (1-4) or the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (3-2), depending on Tuesday's results. Start time of Wednesday's game will also be determined by Tuesday's action with tip-off for SLU's game coming at either 12:30 p.m. EST/11:30 a.m. CST or 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST.
Both games will be televised on FloCollege with a radio broadcast also available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the Cancun Challenge website.
Southeastern is coming off of a tough 64-61 defeat to Wyoming in Laramie on Friday night in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge.
Kam Burton had a career night against the Cowboys, picking up his first career 20-point game as he helped the Lions overcome a 13-point first half deficit and take the lead in the second half, though SLU would ultimately drop the contest.
Sam Hines, Jr. continues to be the top scorer for Southeastern this season, averaging 14.2 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting and 41.7 percent from three. He also grabs 7.6 rebounds a game to lead the team along with 2.4 assists a contest.
Jakevion Buckley is the next best scorer so far this season for the Lions, averaging 12.2 points on 45.8 percent shooting while leading SLU in assists at 4.2 a game. He secures 2.2 rebounds a game while his 1.6 steals per game also leads the team.
After his big day against Wyoming, Burton is up to 10.8 points per game while his 13 made three-pointers leads the team as he hits 43.3 percent from beyond the arc while hitting 47.4 percent overall on the year.
Jeremy Elyzee is right on the precipice of a double-digit scoring average, currently sitting at 9.4 points per game while hitting 47.4 percent from the field. He grabs 4.8 rebounds a game and currently leads the team in blocks with four this season.
The Lions average 70.6 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting as a team while hitting 34.3 percent from three on the year. Southeastern's opponents score 69.2 points per game and hit 41.6 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
Gardner-Webb is coming off of a tough defeat of its own, a 60-54 loss to Charlotte last Tuesday. Anthony Selden and Shahar Lazar both finished with 12 points in the loss to the 49ers. Selden added four blocks, three rebounds, and an assist while Lazar needed just six field goal attempts to get his 12 points, hitting four from the field, two of which were from beyond the arc. Darryl Simmons II added nine points and four rebounds while Isaiah Richards grabbed nine boards.
Simmons II is GWU's top scorer, averaging 15.2 points per game on 51.9 percent shooting, including a team-best 12 three-pointers on 48 percent from deep while his 2.4 assists per game also leads the team. He grabs 3.6 rebounds a game and has a steal per contest.
Selden is the only other Runnin' Bulldog with double-figures in points so far this season. He's averaging 14.8 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting. On the defensive end, he's blocking two opponent shot attempts per contest.
Richards is the team's top rebounder, grabbing 8.2 boards per contest.
Gardner-Webb averages 70 points per game, connecting on 46.4 percent of its total shot attempts, including 34.5 percent from three-point range. The Runnin' Bulldog opponents average 76.8 points per game while hitting on 46.3 percent from the field and 31 percent from three so far in 2024-25.
North Dakota started its Cancun Challenge schedule by going to Loyola Marymount and defeating the Lions in Los Angeles. Treysen Eaglestaff leads four Fighting Hawks who average double-digits in points per game average with 19.2. Mier Panoam averages 10.8 points per game while Amar Kuljuhovic scores 10.4 with Dariyus Woodson putting in 10 a contest.
The Fighting Hawks score 70.6 per game but give up 71 a contest.
Bethune-Cookman also already played its first game of the Cancun Challenge, falling to Tulane in New Orleans on Tuesday, 72-57. Brayon Freeman averages 15 points per game to lead the Wildcats in scoring. Reggie Ward, Jr. scores 10.8 points per game and Trey Thomas puts in 10.4 points per game.
This is the fifth and sixth games of Southeastern's 10-game road trip. Following the Cancun Challenge, the final four games of the month away from home all keep the Lions within the state of Louisiana's borders, starting with a game at Tulane to open the month of December.
