HAMMOND, La. – Coming off of a quality win at Louisiana-Monroe on Monday, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team looks to continue building momentum as it opens its three-game schedule in the Cancun Challenge on Friday in Laramie, Wyoming to take on Wyoming.
Friday's game between the Lions (2-2) and Cowboys (3-1) is set for 6:30 p.m. MST/7:30 p.m. CST in Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium. The game will be televised on the Mountain West Network with a radio broadcast also available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
Southeastern led most of the way before pulling out a late win at ULM on Monday.
Jakevion Buckley led SLU against the Warhawks with 16 points, five assists, and two steals on 70 percent shooting.
Sam Hines, Jr. had his first double-double as a Lion, scoring 14 points while grabbing 11 rebounds against the Warhawks.
Thomas Tut came off the bench for the first time in the season, and it paid off for him in the form of a season-high 11 points on five-of-eight shooting, including his first made three-pointer of the year. He also grabbed a rebound, blocked a shot, and dished out an assist.
Brody Rowbury rounded out the leading scorers for the Lions against ULM with 10 points as he made four of his five shots while grabbing seven rebounds while getting two steals, including the all-important steal with five seconds left which helped secure the win. He also went two-for-two at the free throw line right after that steal, accounting for his lone trip to the charity stripe, which accounted for the game's final margin.
Hines, Jr. continues to lead the Lions in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 15 points and 7.5 boards per game. He hits 51.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. He also dishes out three assists a game.
Buckley averages 13 points per game on 48.6 percent from the field while leading SLU in assists with 4.3 per game. His five steals on the year are tied for the team lead this season with Hines, Jr. and
Kyle Edison.
Jeremy Elyzee scores 9.8 points per game on 48.4 percent shooting while securing 5.3 rebounds a game while getting a steal a contest.
Kam Burton's nine made three-pointers is the most on the team so far through 2024-25. He's shooting 37.5 percent from three on the year while hitting 37.9 percent from the field overall.
Rowbury is averaging seven points and seven rebounds a game on 57.1 percent shooting.
Southeastern is averaging 73 points per game as a team this season while hitting on 46.6 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three and grab 37 rebounds a game. SLU opponents score 70.5 points per game and hit 42.6 percent of their shots while connecting on just 28.3 percent from three-point range and grabbing 34.3 rebounds a game.
Wyoming is wrapping up a start to the season that sees the Cowboys play four of their first five games of the season at home. Their lone loss came in their lone road game this season, a 96-46 defeat at Texas Tech. After that, Wyoming came home and knocked off Utah Tech, 86-69, in its most recent contest.
In the win over the Trailblazers, the Cowboys were led by Kobe Newton who scored 19 points while giving out four assists.
Obi Agbim and Jordan Nesbitt both finished with 12 points in Wyoming's win Saturday over Utah Tech. Nesbitt had a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to his point total with a pair of assists. Agbim had four rebounds, three assists, and a block.
Agbim is Wyoming's leading scorer and assist dealer, averaging 19 points and 3.4 assists per game. He hits 58 percent of his shot attempts, including 60 percent from three while sitting as the team's best three-point shooter with nine made threes on the year. He grabs three rebounds a game as well.
Newton scores 12.3 points per game while hitting 57.1 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from distance while being the Cowboys' second-best three-point maker, having made seven this season. He's dished out three assists per game this season while grabbing 2.8 rebounds a game.
Nesbitt averages 10.5 points per game while hitting 34.1 percent from the field. He's Wyoming's best rebounder at 9.8 boards a game.
Wyoming scores 81 points per game while hitting 48.4 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from three-point range while grabbing 42.5 rebounds a game as a team. Opponents of the Cowboys scored 79 points per game while connecting on 43.9 percent from the field and 30 percent from deep while grabbing 33.5 rebounds a game through four games this season.
Following Friday's game, the Lions immediately head down to Mexico for the final two games of the Cancun Challenge. SLU's first game in Mexico will be against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday.
