Lions Continue Road Trip in Starkville Against Mississippi State

SLU Takes on Bulldogs for First Time in 11 Years, First Visit to Starkville in 15 Years

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team plays the second game of its run of 10-straight away from Hammond, America on Tuesday as the Lions head to Starkville, Miss. to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
 
Tip-off of Tuesday's game between Southeastern (1-1) and Mississippi State (2-0) is set for 6:30 p.m. from Adkerson Court at Humphrey Coliseum. The game will be televised on SEC Network+ while a radio broadcast will also be available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or you can listen to the game on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
 
The Lions are looking to rebound following an 82-72 defeat Sunday afternoon at UAB in just the second-ever meeting between SLU and the Blazers.
 
Jakevion Buckley led Southeastern in Birmingham with 16 points and seven assists. Jeremy Elyzee had his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Hines, Jr. filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block.
 
Two games into the season, Buckley leads Southeastern in scoring and assists at 17 points on 52.4 percent shooting and six assists per game. Hines, Jr. pours in 16.5 points, hitting at a 57.1 percent clip and 80 percent from three, while grabbing a team-high tying 6.5 rebounds a game. Elyzee puts in 13 points a game on 55 percent shooting while matching Hines, Jr. with 6.5 rebound a game.
 
Through two games, SLU is averaging 81.5 points per game while shooting 48 percent overall as a team and 36.4 percent as a unit from three-point range. Southeastern's opponents are averaging 67.5 points per game and hitting 40.2 percent from the field but just 25.5 percent from long range against the Lions.
 
Tuesday's game against SLU wraps up a season-opening three-game home stand for Mississippi State, which has won both of its games this season by more than 30 points. The Bulldogs opened their season with a 95-60 win over West Georgia before knocking off Georgia State 101-66 in their most recent outing.
 
In the win over the Panthers, Josh Hubbard led five Bulldogs in double-figures with 15 points while also contributing six rebounds, six assists, and a pair of steals. Riley Kugel came off the bench to add 14 points. Kanye Clary was a perfect four-of-four from the field, including all three attempts from above the arc, off the bench for 11 points. Claudell Harris, Jr. and RJ Melendez both had 10 points to round out the leading scorers for the Bulldogs against Georgia State.
 
Through two games, Hubbard leads the Bulldogs by averaging 20.5 points while hitting 66.7 percent from the field and 69.2 percent from deep. He also averages four rebounds, three assists, and two steals on the season.
 
Harris, Jr. puts in 15 points per game while connecting on 57.9 percent of his shot attempts. He also dishes out three assists per game.
 
The top rebounder for the Bulldogs is KeShawn Murphy, who averages 5.5 per game while getting seven points on a 53.8 percent field goal percentage. Murphy also averaged four assists per game, which also leads the team.
 
Clary matches Murphy at four assists per game while scoring 7.5 points per game on 54.5 percent shooting.
 
Mississippi State averages 98 points per game while hitting 56.9 percent from the field as a team. The Bulldogs also connect on 41.4 percent of their shot attempts from long range through two games. Mississippi State's opponents average 63 points per game and hit 36.4 percent from the field and just 24.3 percent from above the three-point arc.
 
After Tuesday night's game, the Lions get the rest of the week off before returning to action next Monday night at Louisiana-Monroe.
