Southeastern Claims 87-38 Win in Exhibition

The Lady Lions secure a 53-point lead over Louisiana Christian in its exhibition before season opener.

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team took care of business in its exhibition over Louisiana Christian with a dominant 87-38 victory Friday evening in the University Center.
 
The Lady Lions controlled the entire game against the Wildcats to secure a 53-point lead after holding the visitors scoreless the entire first quarter. Freshman Tyreona Sibley led SLU with 14-points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Alexius Horne and Lexi Alexander tied with 13 points to contribute to the win.
 
Southeastern came out to a hot start with a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter, holding the Wildcats scoreless the entire duration of the quarter. The Lady Lions continued its defensive standard forcing Louisiana Christian to 21 turnovers at the end of the first half. Horne led SLU at the end of the half with 10 points, two assists and three steals. The Lady Lions closed out the first half shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 4-4 from the stripe.
 
Louisiana Christian gained its first points of the game midway into the second quarter. The Wildcats secured five points off turnovers and three points off fast break opportunities. Journi Singleton and Makayla Price tied with five points to lead the Wildcats in the first half.
 
Southeastern's tenacious defense contained the Wildcats to shooting 16.7 percent from the field to end the first half. The Lady Lions gained a 30-point lead late in the second quarter to close out the half with a 45-15 edge over Louisiana Christian.
 
SLU's momentum continued after the halftime break as Southeastern gained back-to-back baskets in the opening minutes. Southeastern limited the Wildcats opportunities early, but Louisiana Christian claimed 15 points in the third quarter shooting 75.0 percent from the free throw line.
 
The Lady Lions continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter to record 44-points in the paint and 30-points off turnovers. Louisiana Christian cut into the deficit with its best scoring run midway in the fourth quarter, but could not contend with Southeastern's aggression. 


SLU closed out the exhibition securing 29-points off fast break opportunities and 15-points off second chance opportunities. The Lady Lions gained 31 points from the stripe and 46 bench points.
 
Southeastern will return to action Monday evening for its season opener versus Millsaps at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center.
