Southeastern Opens SLC Road Slate at HCU

SLU, Huskies face off Saturday at 2 p.m. in Houston

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team will open the road portion of its Southland Conference schedule Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at HCU in Husky Stadium.
 
The game between the Lions (2-4, 1-0 SLC) and the hosts Huskies (3-3, 1-0 SLC) will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
 
Southeastern opened Southland Conference play with a 21-9 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce and is looking for its seventh 2-0 start to conference play since joining the SLC for football prior to the 2005 season.
 
Antonio Martin Jr. led the Lion offense in the win over TAMU-C, rushing for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. In his first six games in a Southeastern uniform, the Atlanta native has rushed for 737 yards - good for fourth nationally in the FCS - and six touchdowns.
 
Eli Sawyer has handled the majority of the work under center for SLU, throwing for 684 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions on 82-for-140 passing. Darius Lewis has been Sawyer's top target, catching 38 passes for 343 yards.
 
The Southeastern defense limited the visiting Lions to 277 yards in Saturday's win. Khamron Ford led SLU with 10 tackles, followed by Donte' Daniels with nine stops. Coryell Pierce had a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss, while Kaleb Proctor and Joshua Randall finished with 1.5 sacks each.
 
Daniels leads SLU with 40 tackles, followed by KK Reno (37), Pierce (33), Ford (27) and Proctor (26).
 
HCU opened Southland Conference play with a 43-22 win over No. 22 McNeese. The Huskies racked up 622 yards offensively, including 414 on the ground.
 
Calvin Hill (261 yards, 2 TD), Darryle Evans (242 yards, 3 TD), Eli Brickhandler (192 yards, 1 TD) and Jesse Valenzuela (191 yards, 1 TD) have all been effective on the ground this season for the Huskies.
 
Brickhandler, who was named SLC Offensive Player of the Week Monday, (32-for-57, 475 yards, 4 TD) and Cutter Stewart (37-for-83, 4 TD, 4 INT) have split time under center for HCU. AJ Wilson (15 catches, 230 yards, 2 TD) and Deuce McMillan (12-206-3 TD) are the top targets in the passing game.
 
D.J. Harris leads Houston Christian with 41 tackles, while Braden Hay has  recorded a team-high four tackles for loss. Xavier Tolliver and Khary Crump share team-high honors with two interceptions apiece.
 
Southeastern holds a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series versus HCU. The Huskies ended SLU's unbeaten run in the series with a 34-19 victory last fall in Hammond.
 
Following Saturday's contest, Southeastern will return home for the next two games, starting with a 4 p.m. Homecoming contest versus Stephen. F. Austin. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
