Gr. G Alec Woodard scored 16 points vs. NSU, now closing in on 10 points per game average on season
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team, fresh off ending a four-game losing streak, looks to turn its most recent win into a streak, starting this weekend with a pair of road contests at Lamar on Saturday and Houston Christian on Monday.
Southeastern (7-12, 2-4 SLC) and Lamar (10-9, 4-2 SLC) will tip-off at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas while Monday's game against Houston Christian (5-12, 3-3 SLC) will also tip at 6 p.m. from Sharp Gymnasium in Houston. Both games will be live streamed on ESPN+ with Saturday's contest at Lamar having an audio broadcast available, thanks to the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide at LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org, or on smart devices through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats for both games will also be available at through the host institution.
The Lions ended a four-game skid on Monday, holding Northwestern State to just 32.1% shooting and only 28 points in the second half to pull away from the Demons for a 71-62 win at the Pride Roofing University Center.
Nick Caldwell battled through foul trouble early in Monday's contest and had an efficient night of scoring, hitting nine of 13 shot attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points, including hitting a three-pointer. He also dished out two assists, grabbed a rebound, blocked a shot, and picked up a steal.
Roger McFarlane picked up his fifth double-double of the season in Monday's win, ending the night with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Eight of his points came from the free throw line as he earned nine attempts at the stripe on the night while his 13 rebounds were the most in the contest by any player. He also ended the night with three steals, picked up his first blocked shot of the season, and added an assist.
Alec Woodard ended the night against NSU by hitting 50% of his attempts from beyond the three-point arc, propelling him to 16 points in the win over the Demons. He also took advantage of being sent to the free throw line on numerous occasions, making seven of his eight attempts from the charity stripe. Woodard also had six rebounds, tied a career high with five steals, and picked up a trio of assists on Monday.
McFarlane continues to lead the Lions in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.1 points and eight boards a game. He hits 41.6% from the field and 33.3% from above the three-point arc. Caldwell sits behind McFarlane in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game on 55.5% shooting while hitting 37% from above the arc. Caldwell grabs 4.6 rebounds a contest and leads the team in blocked shots, averaging 0.7 blocks a game. Woodard's recent run of scoring has him nearing double-digits in scoring, now up to 9.4 points per game on 40.9% shooting and 34.1% from three.
SLU averages 67 points per game and hits 42.6% from the field while hitting on 32.3% on three-point attempts as a team. The Lions give up 71 points per game as opponents hit 44.3% from the field against them, including 33.1% from deep.
Saturday's opponent, Lamar, started fast in Southland Conference play, winning its first three in-conference contests. However, the Cardinals then dropped two-straight before rebounding in their last contest, a 76-65 home win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday.
Terry Anderson and Chris Pryor led the Cardinals with 18 points each in the win over the Commerce Lions. Anderson had a double-double by adding 14 rebounds to his point total as he hit six of his nine shot attempts and hit all five of his free throw attempts. Pryor hit just three of his 10 shot attempts against A&M-Commerce, but got 10 free throw attempts on the evening and made all of them. He also secured three rebounds and had a pair of assists in the win. B.B. Knight also did most of his damage from the charity stripe as eight of his 10 points in the contest came at the line.
Pryor leads Lamar in scoring, assists, and steals on the season, averaging 12.1 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.6 steals a game. He connects on 45.8% of his shot attempts and sinks in 39.8% of his shots from beyond the arc.
Anderson and Knight run with each other in the scoring category, averaging 11.8 and 11.4 points per game, respectively. Anderson hits 47.2% from the field and 30.8% from three while securing 5.9 rebounds per game and being the team leader in blocked shots at 0.9 per game. Knight hits 42.9% of his attempts from the field, including 39% from three.
Adam Hamilton is the last Lamar player averaging double figures in scoring, putting in 11 points per game as he hits 56.2% of his shot attempts. He also leads the Cardinals in rebounding, grabbing 7.2 boards per contest and also rejects 0.9 opposing shots per contest to tie Anderson's team-leading average.
Lamar averages 80.9 points per game on the year, hitting 44.9% of its shot attempts and 36.1% from three as a team. The Cardinals surrender 76.3 points per game while their opponents hit on 42.6% of shot attempts and 35.4% from above the three-point arc.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series against the Lions, a series which dates back to the 1958-59 season, 27-25. However, Southeastern swept the season series in 2022-23 and has won four out of the last six contests against Lamar.
Monday's opponent, Houston Christian, took a pair of tough losses to open conference play, but has rebounded by winning three of its last four games, including an 88-80 home win over New Orleans on Monday. The Huskies look to make it four wins out of five before facing the Lions as HCU heads to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word (5-13, 0-5 SLC) Saturday evening.
In a show of balance on Monday night, five Huskies scored in double figures in the win over the Privateers, led by Marcus Greene who hit on six of his eight shot attempts, including all three attempts from deep, to finish with 18 points. He hit three of four from the free throw line, had two assists, and a rebound in the win. Pierce Bazil came off the bench to match Greene's point total, also scoring 18 points as he hit seven of his 12 shot attempts, including three of five from above the arc, grabbed two rebounds, and had a pair of assists. Michael Imariagbe secured a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, hitting six of his 10 shot attempts and four of his seven shots from the free throw line. He also had three assists and a block against UNO. Jay Alvarez finished the night with 15 points while filling up his stat line with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Bonke Maring hit four of his five field goal attempts and all four of his free throws to end the night with 12 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Alvarez is HCU's leading scorer, averaging 16.7 points per game, connecting on 43.9% from the field, though he just hits 17.6% from above the arc. He also grabs 4.2 rebounds per contest.
Greene scores 14.3 points each time out for the Huskies as he hits 47.4% of his shot attempts and 39.7% from deep. He leads HCU in assists, dropping 3.3 dimes per contest while also picking up 3.4 rebounds a game.
Imariagbe is the final HCU player averaging double figures in scoring as he puts in 11.4 points per game by hitting 57.1% of his shot attempts. He's also teetering on averaging a double-double, grabbing 8.6 rebounds a game, while securing the rim to the tune of 1.2 blocked shots per contest.
Maring is also teetering on a possible double-double average as he scored 9.8 points and grabs 8.1 rebounds a game.
As a team, HCU averages 71.6 points per game on the year, hitting 43.6% of shot attempts from the field and 28.1% from above the three-point arc. The Huskies allow 81.5 points per game on the year while seeing their opponents hit 44.9% of shot attempts against them, including 31.4% from three-point range.
SLU leads the all-time series against HCU 11-7. The Lions have won three-straight over the Huskies and four out of the last five.
