Lady Lions Move Past Texas A&M-Commerce

Southeastern continues to the lead the conference with a six game winning streak after defeating Texas A&M-Commerce.

HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champions Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team moved on to 6-0 in conference play after a stifling 65-48 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce in Pride Roofing University Center Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Jalencia Pierre led all scorers with 15 points and six rebounds to aid the Lady Lions (10-7, 6-0 SLC) in a win with three dominant quarters against Texas A&M-Commerce (8-8, 3-3 SLC).

Taylor Bell contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists off the bench to provide a spark for Southeastern after missing two games. Senior Hailey Giaratano (10 points) collected her 14th game double-digit scoring followed by Kennedy Paul with eight points to close out the game.

The Lady Lions proceed to dominate in the paint over opponents with a 32-20-point advantage over A&M-Commerce. SLU has won in paint production in all six conference matchups.

Southeastern came out to a hot start in the first quarter to claim a ten-point advantage, 20-10. In the second quarter the Lady Lions kept their foot on the gas to remain in control of the game to achieve a 18-14-point advantage over the Lions, 38-24.

SLU contained the top team in scoring offense to well below their average, though two players for A&M-Commerce finished the night in double-digit scoring. Dorian Norris scored 14 points with nine rebounds off the bench to be a spark plug for the Lions shooting 80.0 percent from the three-point line. Mia Deck (10 points) secured above her rebounding average with seven and Ahmya Boyce (six points) also carried A&M-Commerce, but weren't allowed to get much going offensively.

Southeastern added to their lead with balanced scoring from SLU key reserves to win the third quarter, 52-35. A&M-Commerce bounced back in the fourth quarter to gain a 14-13-point advantage too late in the ball game. The Lady Lions took care of business early with 32 bench points and 16 points off turnovers to secure a 16-point victory.

The Lady Lions will be on the road for week four of league play traveling to Houston, TX to take on HCU Thursday evening at 6 p.m. After Thursday's game Southeastern will matchup against Lamar Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.
